We don't even get coverage from the Mickey Mouse 802.11 wireless network up here.
See if there's an isp offering a wireless connection...I use a wireless bb for the house in ID...for example, check http://home.bigskytel.com/services/wprice.htm...you may find something similar in SJ. BTW, I'm using a Cisco industrial-grade bridge, no problems after a couple years of service. My antenna is 26 miles from the tower Up-front equipment costs are, well, interesting...

I prefer to pick up the phone and call Brian Enos.

I tell him what I need to do, he gets all the parts together and places the order for me, and usually has some good insight to extras that are needed or not needed.

Heck, I called him yesterday and ended up spending $991 with him.

When you're doing anything funky it's nice to have a friendly person to talk to about it. He mix/matched all the parts I'll need for .50 Beowulf in no time, and there's no Dillon conversion specifically for that caliber.

        Cheers.

Actually, I can run VoIP on dial-up (~44K). It's not great, but it does sort of work.

So the latency of the satellite is worse than a dialup, but the throughput is better on the satellite than the dialup?

Isn't CA broadband as a whole, pretty low ranked compared to most US states? Is that because we have an older infrastructure, or because the state is so big and many places aren't well connected?

Though this side of the telecom business is 'non-regulated' (for start ups, anyway) unless there's a pretty good guarranty of a good return on investment, it's not likely to happen.
The big companies are still hampered by mostly local city/county regs that ask for a lot of money to award the franchise. It's more cost effective to prep new tracts for fiber than to redo existing homes where permits are required to retrench, bore, place conduit/subduct, pull new cable, place new terminals and drops.

Too there are issues with state tariffs as to whether copper connections MUST be left in place when fiber is available. This is expensive for the providers because they are taxed on the value of the network that's in place.
Even if it's not being actively used. The scrap value can't be recovered either until it can be pulled.

SCE's been working on a new network technology that will let them use the power grid to provide internet access. That may be the answer for many of the rural communities that at least have connections to the power grids.

There's a BIG problem with BPL (Broadband over Power Lines) technology. It uses HF Radio Frequencies to transmit the information, and the power lines act as one honking long antenna, resulting in RF pollution over wide areas at certain frequencies.

Sadly, the FCC have adopted this technology hook, line and sinker, and don't seem to be interested in enforcing the interference issues. (That's why the ARRL is currently suing the FCC to make them do their job.)

For discussions on CA's broadband infrastructures..... that is more suited as an independent thread in the "off topic lounge".

I wish they had short viedo's on the products in action. I am thinking about getting into reloading and know jack **** about it or what all the aparts and other products are/do. I checked out the brian enos site and have got a lot of info which was helpful. I think i am just going to order the RL550 video and a reloading book.

Agreed. Mea Culpa for getting the original topic side tracked.

If you haven't purchased any equipment yet, there's a thread somewhere on this board about a 'group buy' by somebody over at Irvington Arms. If you live in the Bay Area, it might be a cheaper way of getting the basic equipment.

^ Yeah it already ended. I'm thinking of looking for something when I attend the Reno Gun Show next month. Or at least get some demo's in person to give me a better understanding.
