    Brass stuck in Sizing die!!!!

Ok, so I am an ultra noob lets get that out of the way first. The other night I was re-resizing some of my brass. I had already primed them and figured that if I take the depriming pin out of the full length resizer die, that I can resize without punching out the new primer (long story...basically set the sizing die wrong). Well for some reason (too light of a lube job) my .223 brass got stuck in my sizing die.....with a live primer in it! So after about an hour and a half of twisting, pounding, cussing and actually having the primer explode out of the pocket (dremel = bad idea) I finally got the brass out. However, I had to use the demel and a carbide tip to cut down the brass but now the inside of the die is scuffed up. Not bad but enough that you can tell. Any ideas on what I should do? I was able to keep resizing but wonder if I really messed up my die or not. Any ideas guys?

Unfortunately, if the inside of the die is scratch up pretty bad, it will leave the same mark on every brass you run thru them.

Next time tap the live primer carefully out of the pocket using the the depriming pin, and use something similar to RCBS Stuck Case Remover to remove the stuck brass.

Don't worry about the stuck brass, I got 3 stuck brass so far in 3 years or so and had to send my die back to Hornady twice (great customer service BTW). It's a learning process!

        1) Throw the die away it's toast.
        2) If it happens again take the decapping rod out from the top if possible and drive the case out from the top.
        3) If it comes out the bottom you can push the case out with the rod by screwing it out against the case. LUBE the threads.

EVERYBODY gets one stuck at least once in their lives. Anyone who says they don't is lying or hasn't had the fun yet.

Does the die now scratch the brass? You can hone the die, if it does.

Get that same Dremel tool, place a polishing ball/wheel on it, a small touch of Flits polishing compound, and polish it smooth. WORK SLOWLY, as the Flits will remove metal.

PS: Look on the bright side...now you can ID your spent brass at the range.

Awesome!!! thanks guys. the inside is not terrible but I will polish it down a little. Plus I didn't even know there was a tool to remove stuck brass? Glad this is an issue people have faced before. I thought I was only only guy out there to get a stuck piece.

If it was an RCBS small base die, chuck it no matter what it cost you.

I highly recommend the Dillon non-carbide .223 die no matter what press you use. Never stuck a case in a Dillon die with Dillon lube. I have stuck cases in RCBS SB dies with all types of lube including the revered Imperial sizing wax.

I also highly recommend the Dillon lanolin based spray lube. Chuck a 100 or so cartridges in a cut down cardboard box, give them a spritz or two while shaking them around a bit and then just go and size-em.

I used to run a neck brush with spray lube on it through the case mouths just before I sized them on the theory that the inside neck needed some lubing, but found in practice that the Dillon lube gets in there in sufficient amount on it's own.

I hope im past my "one stuck case in a lifetime". Id like to not have to deal with it again, even if it only took a pair of pliers and about 2 minutes to clear.

It's too bad you scuffed up the die and (from the way I understand it) removed the base of the case. I was able to beat out one of my stuck cases by taking out the neck sizing bolt/pin, and, putting a punch in its place, I was able to drive out the stuck case with several good whacks from a mallet.

*I only used that die to size ~100 more cases before I saw a good deal and bought a new set of dies. Needless to say, I fired those hundred or so rounds without incident.
