I would never leave a case that has been charged overnight.
Honestly thats horrible advice IMO unless you are just leaving the cases primed and sized. After the charged has been dropped finish the round.
Please if your gonna offer this guy advice, be a bit more concise in how you offer it. Last thing he needs is to follow something that we all know is wrong, but is just explained badly and blow off his damn hand.Last edited by zfields; 11-02-2010, 10:22 PM.Sandstorm Custom Rifle Slings : Custom Paracord slings

first, get a good manual and read it the part in the front before the recipes, you are starting with .40 S&W which is a high pressure round. don't try and "wing it" with what you have read on the interwebComment

Yes, you will have to buy dies no matter what kind of press you get whether it is a hand press, a single stage press or a progressive press. The only reloader you won't have to buy dies for is the "Lee Classic Loader" where you use a hammer to perform each press stage. There is a youtube video where Richard Lee loads a single round in 40 seconds, but doing this for more than 20 rounds will get very tedious.
Start out with the Lee Anniversary Kit or the Breech Lock Challenger Kit (I like that better because you can prime the cases without the need of the press, a set of dies and a good reloading book like the ABC's of Reloading. You don't have to buy through Cablelas, but you can find cheap/free shipping deals. Buy your primers and powder locally so you don't pay hazmat fees and you will only need 1 pound to start with for pistol (that would probably load over 1000 rounds).Comment

Don't get the cart before the horse...I did and it made all sorts of problems and I almost got discouraged and quit before I got started..don't worry about buying components right now...always be components...
I'd get the Lyman or Lee reloading manuals...you can get the current and "last printing" issues of either on E bay for a bargain...The front parts of the manuals is something that is the same from book to book for the most part so not necessary to spend the new manual price to just read up on reloading in general...if you are going to use a bullet and powder that is a "proven" component and not some new, crazy stuff you can probably get good solid load info from the year or two old manuals as well.
The Lee anniversary kit at about 90 bucks shipped (all over e bay) is a real bargain for a low volume new loader. I have one and it works great...but read some information and literature first. There are some good youtube videos of using the Lee anniversary kit that at least address the general procedures in a pretty simple way.
Again, don't be buying components and odds and ends until you know more or you might just end up selling the stuff and taking up golf.
Good luck and load safe.God and the Constitution give me my rights and actions...any other input is just blabbering.Comment

I have the LEE Anniversary kit. I love it. It has got a lot of work and trust me it will hold up to pistol rounds. I abuse the thing compared to what you are going to use it for. As everyone has already said. Before you buy components. Find out where your going to put your bench, Get a good book or 2-5. Get as much Data of the web as you can and print it. Keep posting questions here as they come along. Good Luck

The lee kit is a good kit. Ive been reloading for awhile know. My kit came with the lee reloading manual . Which i suggest reading it. You can also look up reloading videos on you tube . Look for ammosmith's videos he's pretty good on explaining stuff ,thats how i started casting my bullets from watching he's videos. But casting is another project. Start with reloading intro.

Getting Re-loaded
Markus,
I think the Lyman reloading manual is one of the best, it doesn't focus on one companies' bullets or powder. RCBS has some great short videos on their web site on the steps of reloading. I don't reload 40 S&W but I do load 9mm and 45ACP along with several revolver loads. PM me and we can setup for you to come over to my dusty garage in Tustin. I'll run you through making some ammo on a single stage press then you will have a better idea what you need. Free sample...no obligation...try before you buy!You do not have to be crazy to hang out with me. I'll train you!Comment
