    Long Range Rifle

I am contemplating getting a rifle for the long range rifle stage of cowboy action. I don't think I can afford a steady diet of .45-70. I have been thinking about .30-.30, but someone I know recommended .38-55
Can anyone give me some good information on the caliber?

    What’s long range to you?
This is how I view the basic long range stuff.

    under 800 yards would be a 308
    under 1,200 yards would be a 7WSM, .260Rem, .243Win, 6.5x47Lapua,
under 1,400 yards is the 300 win
under 2,000 yards is the 338 Lapua

I am guessing 100-200 yrds. The rounds you mentioned probably only have legs to go that far.

        Long Range Rifle

I probably shoud have been clearer. I am talking about Cowboy action, which requires a rifle type and caliber in use prior to 1900. This is a game format.
For serious modern long range I am well equipped.

Is a Winchester Model 1895 in .30 US (30-40 Krag) an acceptable choice? I had heard it was not, but it meets the criteria of pre-1900 for rifle and ammuntion.

              Long Range Rifle

Sadly, the 95 Winchester and or 30-40 is not allowed. It seems that the SASS
people can make up rules and change them, arbitraily. Quite arrogantly, in my opinion. They won't allow the .30-40 because they're afraid of spitzer bullets. The .30-40 was normally loaded with round nose as was the .30-03 (original loading for the 1903 Springfield. They will also not allow any box magizine rifles. AS I said, purely arbitrary.

I think a 30-30 would be the way to go because of the cheap ammo and brass
