What primers would you recommend?

Isnt it funny how fast things change , If this question had been asked a year or two ago the answer would have been whatever I can find to fit in the hole ...cost be damned. Isnt it great again to have a choice.


But actually I find it truely amazing, I have been reloading since I was 12 ...and have not yet had a defective primer. When having a choice, I had always gone with CCI...in the dry times I used Federal/Winchester/Remington...and found that all of those went bang consistently too. Actually I started using Remington 7 1/2's in the 204 / 223 and Winchester WLP's in the 44 mag and now 458 Socom...the rest stayed CCI.

cci, i have had some ftf's with winchesters and remington. They popped on the second strike, but in a match it causes u to lose time

Winchester SPP and LPP. Haven't had any issues with this brand of primers.

I use CCI most of the time, Winchester sometimes.

If you have tuned guns and need a primer that is about guaranteed to go off, the brand is Federal. If you have unmodified guns that can light off anything, any other primer that is cheapest with my preferences being Winchester and then Remington. If those are unavailable, I'll go with CCI, Magtech, and/or Wolf/Tula. My 650 used to despise CCI primers of any kind but with Federal buying them out, it seems that it will tolerate them now. All of my large rifle duty is Federal large rifle primers.. so far all of my small rifle is Winchester but I don't shoot too much small rifle and have an ample supply of Winny's.. Pistol depends on the gun but right now Federals for tuned revos and Remington for all else till I run out then Winny's, and then whatever I can get my hands on.

Before you do that, do a little shopping at Widener's. They've got Wolf primers for $18 to $19 per thousand. I can confirm that they also consistently go BANG. This is from a guy who uses mostly CCI primers nowadays.

I've been using Remington SR & LR primers... but always hear about CCI being the preferred primer.
