    1. Difference in recoil? A lot.
    2. Difference in price? Quite a bit.
    3. Difference in accuracy? None if you use the right bullets in the right barrel.
    4. Difference in maximum distance? For the average shooter, quite a bit.

Although #4 is pretty relative. The maximum range of 5.56 (since I'm assuming that 5.56 x 45 mm = .223) reach approximately 800 yards with the heavier projectiles.

80gr will make it to 1000 yards out of a 20" barrel. I don't have a reference that lists the rifles used by the winners of the Farr trophy (1000 yard service rifle match at Camp Perry), I'm positive one of the winning shooters in at least one year used the M16A2/AR15 in .223.

The National Rifle Association is America's longest-standing civil rights organization. Together with our more than five million members, we're proud defenders of history's patriots and diligent protectors of the Second Amendment.

The Farr Trophy, named in honor of a shooter in 1921 who set a record that has not been equaled to this day, went to Sfc Grant Singley of the AMU. Like Manges in the Porter, Singley shot an AMU-built M16 rifle to win. His scores: a relay high of 195-14X and a shoot-off win at 98-4X.

                    okay, help yourself. Seriously.

use google (maybe you've heard of it) to find some online ammo retailers. Compare their .223 prices to their .308 prices. Voila!

Then you can get even MORE creative (and earn a gold star for the day for research ability) and google something like [rifle recoil] and once again notice that google is your friend. The very first entry is Chuck Hawk's very useful "Rifle Recoil Table" that will tell you that a .308 has on the order of 4-5 times the felt recoil of a .223 (depending on rifle, load, operating system, etc.)

                        Recoil?
When they say "half" what they're basing it on is:

The Recoil Impulse for the two cartridges is quite different. For the smaller 80 grain MatchKing in the 223 the Recoil Impulse is 1.53 lb-sec while the 155 grain, 308 Win Palma bullet has a Recoil Impulse of 2.87 lb-sec. The impulse recoil is calculated has follows:
Impulse Recoil = Bullet Weight in grains times muzzle velocity in fps times the powder charge in grains times 4000 and all divided by 225400.

Bottom line is the Palma Rifle using the 223 Cartridge will have about half the impulse recoil than one that uses 7.62 NATO Cartridge.

                        Price?
Most bolt action rifles will cost the same in either cartridge, the same models will work with both cartridges. In semi-auto rifles the 308 will cost more, figure at least a 50% premium for 308 except for in guns like the Saigas where it is a little smaller difference.

                        Accuracy?
That's more a function of the shooter as both cartridges will outshoot most shooters. At shorter distances the reduced recoil of the 223 will make it easier to shoot for better scores. For 600-1000 yards the better wind bucking ability of the 308 will usually give you better accuracy.

                        Distance?
                        Heavier bulllets travel further.

                        All the juicy stuff?
The 223 is more of a target/varmint round while the 308 is a medium game/target round.

Thank you 1911whore and fjold, thats really all the answers i wanted. Funny how some people can be such D**** about something when all they have to give is a simple honest answer. I hope that Someone aforementioned thinks that over and perhaps listens to his mommy when she says "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all". From what i heard this was a learning form...just trying to do so.

Asking someone to search is meant to save them time & give them the opportunity to get a little more data than a quick reply can provide. This thread is definitely in the category. Not a shot at you, just a question that gets asked all the time.

                            whats the difference in kick?

Hard to pin down exactly...you can now calculate, thanks to Fjold, the exact recoil but you need to do the math. Differences in recoil you actually feel may fade somewhat due to weight of the rifle, the gun's action type, what kind of butt pad is installed, position of the the shooter, and muzzle attachment. How much the shooter weighs also bears on felt recoil...it's the built in padding factor.

                            price? accuracy?

Questions you ask indicate probably 99% related to your shooting skill, remainder to the gun and bullets. You can get a preview of your shooting skill with a .22...solid 1-inch groups at 50 yards indicate you've got your basics covered and mastered.

                            distance?

.308, heavier bullet. More retained energy at a give distance from the weapon.

                            all the juicy stuff!

completely understandable...however you don't have to cop such an attitude when saying it. Don't you think i already know to google it. Done already, however its nice to get an experienced and friendly opinion.
