Glad you walked away without any injuries. Let it be another important reminder:

ive done that so many times its never blown a primer how hard are you whacking and how many strokes does it take to get it to come out?

i press my backwards primers out and seat them correctly i dont save the powder as it may have a lead shaving or other crud

          (yes intentional inuendo setup)

i also have the collet-style puller, but the impact is a lot faster. also, with some very crimped-in surplus stuff i've pulled down, the collet puller was slipping no matter how tight i cranked it down, so i used the impact puller on one of my steel-toed work boots. worked like a charm.

Amazing you could seat a primer upside down. How did they flip over? Im thinking it could have detonated on the press when seating. Good to know we cant pull apart an upside down primer. Glad your OK.

Anyone here who reloads and "CLAIMS" they never make mistakes is full of it. I had that happen in another thread when someone said "some people shouldnt reload". To which I stated "everyone makes mistakes". Some times you walk away and some times you dont.

I'm happy to say that this has not happened to me YET. But, I know it is a possibility. My greatest fear is that someday, I might have a CCI #35 primer go off accidently. But, even a smaller primer would be scary and could cause bodily injury. Glad you were not hurt!

true that, we've all screwed up at some point. mostly just a matter of how severe and what the consequence turns out to be. thankfully i haven't cocked-up anything bad enough to cause injury, but it's keeping that in mind that will hopefully prevent such an occurence. just when you think you've got it down, mastered, etc..take a step back. like anything else, you get too comfortable doing something, you're gonna screw it up. anyhow, good luck and happy reloading.

Chances are the primer did not detonate.Think about it,if the primer were to detonate,it would ignite the powder and you would have more than a stinging sensation
My story: Recently picked up another 550 so I moved my reloading station from the study to the garage. In the carpeted study I would give 2-3 good wacks to dislodge the bullet. So, the first bullet I need to pull on the concrete garage floor I think to myself maybe give like a 50% wack. And that's what I did-BANG, bing, clink I hear the round ricocheting around. Now I think how the heck did that round detonate? Well I hunted around and found all the pieces (except the 230gr. RN), including the collet with the case and an unfired primer.

Did you hit the puller on concrete ? From now on I will not. My reloading bench is an old dresser, I will hit it on the side of that, and turn my head and close my eyes and try not to pee my pants !

I'm sure that is exactly what happened. Think about it, the powder would have to ignite to have enough force to blow the puller to pieces.

I don't think that it's amazing that it happened. I've had primers flip over in my 550 and 650. They seat easier upside down. Hell, I've even had primers flip over while priming with a Lee hand primer.

If the primer was upside down and facing outwards. The blast would propel outward away from the powder. The primer either got hot enough to ignite the powder inside or blew a hole in the primer cup.

I think I'll just stick with my single stage press a little longer.

ummm, ever thought about soaking the live primer before hammer it out?? lol. just a drop of oil or water will kill a primer. drip a drop on the backward primer, let sit for a few minutes and hammer away.

I am not so sure of that! Don't quote me on this but, aren't primers sealed? As in it may take more that "water" to kill a primer! My buddy used some primers that were soaked when his water heater broke and he let them dry a while and reused them without any problems! Just saying!
