Yep, some people should not reload. This goes for ANYONE who wants to blame their equipment for their mistake. That's the same bad logic that antis use when they blame firearms for the actions of those who use them improperly. I own both a 550 and a 650 and, I like the 550 more for many reasons. One of which is the lack of auto indexing. Also, you can use a powder check on a 550.
Well said CSA, if you're going to blame a 550 for a double charge you probably shouldn't be reloading.

A powder check die will not keep someone from double charging 100% of the time. You must be focused when reloading and pay attention. You should not rely on a piece of equipment to prevent a double charge, that's just silly. Equipment can fail. Powder check dies can fail.

You should always look into the case before placing a bullet. In most calibers you can easily see the powder and visually check to see if a double charge occurred. If you can't see the powder, at least use a powder that will overflow or almost overflow if double charged.

There are many great powders out there that are high volume. WST is one of the best. I just recently switched to Trail Boss for 38spl for these reasons mentioned above.

I am sorry to hear about your misfortune though and that HK, but glad you are OK.

      I see...

By your "flawed" logic anyone who ever made any mistake at anything should not do that thing. If someone wrecks a car they shouldn't drive. If someone falls down they should walk. If someone falls off a ladder they shouldn't climb. If someone fails a test they shouldn't be in school. F'ing stupid reply, just stupid! You never make ANY mistakes huh?

If a car has bad blind spots and you back into someone because you couldn't see and then buy a car without blind spots to "solve" the issue then you shouldn't have been driving a car to begin with. With logic like that who needs idiots? Seems like the driver resolved an issue , with a flawed product, so it would not happen again.

I always get a few high and mighty soapbox answers when I post what happened. I ran a reloading press for 22 years before this happened and still do and you say "some people should not reload".Didnt realize I was speaking to someone who never makes mistakes. Never had any issues with the 650, ever! I tried to make the 650 malfunction and couldnt. The 550 is a problem waiting to happen. Three seperate things went wrong to cause the double charge. I can tell you that I do make mistakes and I wanted to make sure it NEVER happened again. I bought the 650 to eliminate the chance for another doublecharge. The 650 wont allow a double charge to be thrown by its nature of auto-indexing. I tried half cocking the 650 numerous times and it always indexes to the next station. It is impossible to throw 2 charges. Problem solved. Plenty of thinking people agree with me on this topic so dont get too self righteous. I wont go over the details as I can see you have a closed mind with a big opinion.

        Nope, it won't.
You could take the battery out or let it run dead and it won't make noise.
You could also take the powder check off the press and it won't work.
You could also mis-adjust it so that it does not work.

Short of any of those possibilities, it works as advertised though.

99.99% is very close to 100%, but it's indeed NOT 100%.

          Nope.
It has the changable toolhead of a 550.

To me, that press above looks like an AT500 with a powder measure and auto index upgrades.
The primer bar included is from the AT500 for sure.
The Dillon AT500 was Dillon's turret press.

The 450 came with manually activated powder measure and primer system and the frame did not have removable toolheads.
You had to pull the primer bar and powder dump yourself.
I have a 450 that's upgraded to auto powder, auto primer and auto eject, but still has the fixed frame without removable toolheads.

I'm perplexed on why it comes with a primer tube though...

Uh, maybe you should reread my post. I never said that someone should not do anything because they made a mistake. I said that ANYONE who feels the need to BLAME an inanimate piece of equipment for their own mistake should not be reloading. The 550 is not a mistake waitint to happen. But, in your case, it sounds like the operator of your 550 is a mistake waiting to happen. Yes, it is possible to double charge or load a sqiub in a 650. Either of which can have fatal results. If you truely believe that it is the press and not the person running the press that can be blamed for a mistake, I feel sorry for you and those around you. I am far from close minded but, it appears that you are so convinced that you are perfect and your 650 can not make a mistake, that you are the closed minded one.

BTW, I want you to realize that I did not attack you personally until, you wanted to make this personal. Reread the post you qouted and you will see that I refered to "ANYONE who wants to blame their equipment for their mistake". Obviously, I must have hit the nail on the head since, you felt the need to lash out at me.

I stand corrected. At least I realized that it was not a standard 550B.

Wow.. you guys are good. After speaking to Dillon, I found out that this is in fact an AT500. The seller is selling it as a 550b but he just informed me before I read this and spoke to Dillon that he has a buyer for $250. I emailed him explaining what this actually is and hopefully he will do the right thing. Getting it upgraded to a 550b by Dillon will cost around $250, according to them.

Sorry that my advice was off, but it's good to hear that you checked with Dillon. I've never read about them steering someone wrong. Good luck finding another press!

I emailed the guy and told him that this was not a 550 (I was very detailed, BTW), even according to Dillon, and he simply said. "What are you talking about????" He sold it to somebody else (for $250, thinking it was a 550) who got screwed.

save a little more and get yourself a 550 or save more for the 650. i didnt have alot of money the first time so i just bought the press for the first time, and for the next paycheck for the rest of the upgrades.

7000 rounds and counting on the 650, totally worth it. another 3000 rounds and i should have paid the press for the difference from buying factory ammo and reloading.

Keep a copy of that e-mail and response. It might help the buyer sue the seller for fraud
