I have loaded a .223 round by mistake using only a CCI #41 primer and Hornaday 55gr fmj. The bullet did not leave the casing.

" a really light bullet" - Sure, I fire 7gr 22pellets from my 222, 218b and hornet all the time with just a primer. Load the pellet *** first to prevent the skirt being blown off. Makes a decent 50' crow control round. -- my ha-penny

And, we have a winner. Someone speaking from experience and proving that it is doable!

Gunboat, I'm not following you about how to load the pellet though. Do you load it into the case upside down? So, the pellet leaves the muzzle bass ackwards? Do you lightly crimp it? I'd assume no crimp but, you're the expert here.

          csabiggun --
Yes, essentially I load the pellet in the case with the nose to the rear -
While it seems logical that the hollow base would seal better when fired the skirt to nose section is so thin it usually separates and stays behind.
Hollow base first does not seem to affect accuracy -- minute of crow-

Pellets vary some by maker so there can be some fiddlin' around to get the right size expander plug for a push fit. I do not crimp

For the bee I have made a case "adapter" , an old case with a steel nose section of the correct diameter to hold a pellet in a cavity and drilled primer flash hole diameter to the base - Sounds a bit awkward but is rather simple.

I have tried a few with a "pinch" of powder (bullseye) but have not really had much success with them.

Before fiddlin' with expander plugs , you can expand the pellet shirt a bit with a center punch, by hand not with a hammer :-), to help hold the pellet in the case.

Thanks, maybe I'll give it a try when I find my stash of .22cal pellets.
