    ...Wolf Ammo?

I hear a lot of negative things about Wolf Ammo. What is so bad about it? this is going to be my first bulk ammo purchase and im trying to find out what the best deal is. seems everywhere i look wolf is the cheapest. Can someone please give me some feedback and point me in the right direction. I dont do any reloading yet so im not worried about that. thanks

Just sometimes you come across a batch of Wolf that has some problems firing.....could be the gun or could be the ammo. like the firing pin isn't hitting hard enough. but it shouldnt be that big of a problem

What do you mean by dirty? Just a lot of unburnt powder?

I believe what AE meant was yes, there is a good amount of unburnt powder, as well as substantial carbon residue after discharge .

Many people have mixed reports , but I have shot 1000's of rounds of WOLF 7.62x39, and 5.45x39 (Black/Yellow Box, Black Box, Military Classic (FMJ, & HP - both the lacquer coated, as well as the steel cased) out of my AK's and never had any failures with that round... ever (all the AK's do have chrome-lined barrels I should mention, and I keep to a very strict maintenance schedule with all my firearms).

I have never shot Wolf in .223 however, and the AR platform is much more.... discriminating that the AK I should mention.

The only negative I will say about the Wolf brand is that it leaves a good amount of residue in the internals, and can take awhile to clean it out.

**It also is not the most accurate round, but hey the AK platform is not designed to be a "precision rifle". It's a greedy little WARHOG that will eat up anything you give it, and belch fire every time you squeeze the trigger.

I like to keep at least 500rds with each of my rifles, so the cost of Wolf sells me . However, I do keep some Remington White Box, and Fiocchi laying around in the ammo safe as well..... IMHO, Wolf would be a good stockpiling ammo......... just in case.

Also something to keep in mind is some ranges dont allow steel cased ammo

Someone with more knowledge might be able to clarify though

The biggest problem with wolf is that its magnetic attractive so most ranges wont let you shoot them. As for function and all, some AR's dont like them, or the AR's buffer spring needs to be broken in or shorther so it'll cycle the wolf ammo. One of my buffer spring is too stiff for the wolf. After changing it, it cycled just fine. My SU will eat all the wolf you give it. So far, its pretty fat. It ate 6k rounds. My AR ate about 2k. No issues other then its magnetic and some ranges wont let you use them.

Thanks everyone. It seems like a 50/50 review. Now what's the problem with steel casings at ranges?

There is no problem with steel casings, there are problem with steel core bullet or magnetic bullets. Because the fire dept said it can cause fire.

Steel cased ammo is usually not scrutinized. What they're typically looking for is steel CORE ammo, which has ferrous metal in the projectile...

Some wolf cartridges and other steel cased ammo, use steel (or bi-metal) cases and non-ferrous projectiles. It just depends. Get a small magnet from an auto parts store and "try before you buy"...

Never used Wolf ammo other than 22 LR and Shotshells. As far as I can tell you, their 22 LR and Shotshells are excellent. 22LR is made in Germany and shotshells are made in Spain.

Topgun, what's your reasoning behind "never" use wolf ammo? What's your experiance with it?

I was never interested in shooting Russian ammo (steel case, steel jacket, etc.). I will pay more for American made, quality ammo (primarily match ammo or my reloads). Many of my guns are match guns (pistols and rifles). Barrels are expensive (Krieger M-1A and AR-15 barrels are about $400 + each, barrel blanks are about $300 each). I need to make the best out of these guns I have.
