Using Corn Cob at the pet store.

Does anybody use corn cob at the pet store. It seems more course than the corn cob you would use just for tumbling. Do you get the same results?

I heard of folks using corn bedding from pet stores, usually cheaper than ordering it from a shooting store.
    They have walnut bedding too.

Which is better....corn bedding or the walnut? Don't know the difference and I'm sure people have there preferences.

The corn cob I got from some big-box pet store was a disaster -- just big enough to fit into the necks of my .223 brass, fill them up, and then get jammed in there. I tried using a dental pick to pull the stuff out, but it was so time consuming I just threw out the whole batch.

Pet store corn cob is fine for pistol not rifle. Trust me.

Corn is for polishing. Walnut is for cleaning. Walnut gets my brass clean enough, so I've never bothered with corn.

If you have access to Grainger you can get corn cob that is fine enough to do rifle and not get stuck in the necks. 40# bag for around $23.00. It is listed as blasting media in to different grits.

I have never used the corn cob stuff to tumble only walnut. Cleans up and shines the brass just fine. I add some nu finish car polish and some minerals spirits. Tumble without brass for 30 minutes or so after adding the polish and minerals spirits. Add the brass and tumble for about 3 hours.

Got the recipe from somewhere on this forum. Works great. Brass is shines like it was new or better.

I tumble in 12 grit that I got from Harbor Freight 25# for 25 dollars. Get it all clean and shiny. Lube and resize for rifle them tumble the lube off in 24 grit walnut from Harbor Freight. Same price as the 12 grit.

No more stuck pieces in flash holes.

Aren't feed stores supposed to be good sources, too?

So the course grit is better for basic cleaning of old and dirty brass? I have corn cob, but I picked up the 25 grit walnut from Harbor Freight today. Since I had the corn cob, should I have gotten the 12 grit walnut instead?

i get my walnut from petco- its much cheaper than media at a local gun shop....and it works great. fine enough to clean even 223 brass inside and out.
