Case preperation necessary?

Okay I been hearing alot of different things that people do to prepare there fired cases for reloading(case trimming, swage, chamfer etc). Is it all needed? Is it bad not to do it?

I have been reloading for the last year or so and never do anything more than throw my once fired brass into a tumbler. The die resizes and deprimes the case, and once I put in a new primer, put some powder, seat a new bullet and give it a visual inspection, it's done and ready for me to take to the range.

I have never had an issue with the ammo I reloaded, with the exception of one FTF. It was a .308 and Im pretty sure it was because the primer was no good. My ammo is more than accurate for plinking too. Heck I get 1MOA or better out of my Tikka t3 with my .308s

Should I really be doing all the case preperation that others do? If so why?

Ohh, I do use the Lee primer pocket cleaner though!

Yes.

You will eventually.
Watch for extreme pressure signs.
That's the clue that your brass is too long and it's crimping the bullet while chambering.

I would check case length for stretching, and chamfer case mouth to ease bullet seating, otherwise if it works for you --

You do have a reloading manual right?
There should be a whole chapter devoted to working up a load.

PLEASE don't tell me that someone convinced you that you could get all the info you needed to reload by reading stuff online...

No I do have a manuel...I have two actually But I use them mainly as recipe books

And no I dont go through brass that often. When i need new brass I just buy a good amount of factory rounds, shoot them and save the brass (plus collect all my friends )

I would 2nd the notion that you read a good reloading manual. Why? because knowledge is your friend. You really do want to understand the elements of brass sizing, loading, etc. You see, guys have been doing this for some time now, reloading, and all that knowledge has been collected in one form or another, to your advantage. No need to reinvent the wheel. Does this mean you cannot reload without all that knowledge, No, but it will likely make it safer, and that alone is a good thing. Also, if you really want to squeeze the best accuracy out of your loads, you will need to know what steps may be taken to make it happen.

I don't think it's a good idea to load rifle brass that hasn't been trimmed, just sayin.

Manual? I thought you just hammered a new primer in, poured powder in case until full and shoved a bullet in the neck. You mean there is a whole manual to tell you how to do that?
