I am just getting in to reloading and noticed some of the once shot brass available, particularly .223, has crimped primers. How much work is it to deal with - what is involved - should I avoid it?

There are swaging dies to remove the crimp on the primer pocket of the cartridge. I bought one on ebay for ~5 bucks several years ago and used it to remove the crimp on Federal .223 brass. I prefer to swage than using a trimmer since swaging doesn't remove brass from the primer pocket.Comment

It's no big deal, most military brass has the primer crimped in. After you pop out the primer (I use Lee's universal depriming die) you can ream each one out with a deburring tool, or swage it one with a swaging tool. I use RCBS's swaging die (~$35 & slower) or you can pick up Dillons swaging tool ($99 & way faster). Depends on how many you have to do and how much you want to spend, but at least you only have to swage or ream once... after that it's just like any other brass.
You pays your money, you make your choice.... only you can decide if it is worth it. That's the whole point of reloading.... you can do as much or as little work as you want. You can even buy brass already prepped so you don't have to deal with the crimps.Comment

This looks great - as I mentioned I am a Noob so what is an O shaped press the reviews of this product mention? What is the best set up for using this since it can't be used on a progressive press?+1 on the RCBS primer pocket swager. O-shaped just means the frame of the press is a ring, actually a rounded rectangle

The RCBS primer pocket swager will work with any standard reloading press. Some people mentioned the cup that goes over the ram is too small to fit a Lee press, but someone else said they contacted RCBS and RCBS sent them one that fit free of charge. I use the RCBS primer pocket swager on my Lee Classic Turret press without problems.Revolvers are not pistols

I have 6000 223 cases to deprime/remove crimp. I am using the #2 phillips bit in a drill press and it takes about 2 seconds of contact for each case. It is a daunting task I am seeing, but time is more available to me right now more than the funds to have some one else process. so far I have maybe 750-1000 done.sigpic

Buy a Dillon swager for $100. Use it. Then sell it for $100.Comment

The RCBS or Dillon swagers and the Hornady and Lyman reamers all work well. I prefer the swagers but the reamers will work also. IMO the Hornady reamer is better than the Lyman. Stick the reamer in a drill press or an electric drill and ream away.
The real pain is decapping. Having bent several decapping rods, the Lee universal decapper is the ticket. I recommend it highly.http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/...lf09/18829.jpg http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/...lf09/index.jpg
