    Too much setback?

    Hey all,

I just ordered 500 rounds from the bass pro deal and when I opened the box to inspect, i noticed about 30 cartridges had obvious setback in them. I'm assuming these are all unsafe to shoot??

Wow that setback is quite severe and likely to cause potential problems with overpressure. I would not even consider shooting it. I know stores generally have issues with returns on ammo but give it a try. Hopefully they can do something to help you since this ammo is obviously out of spec.

If you contact Remington, they'll most likely swap out the bad ammo. You don't need to go back to the retailer.

I just opened the bulkpacks I have and saw the same thing. Were your setback bullets in the top tray? On the outside edges?

One one tray, one entire long row on the outside, and also one of the short rows on the outside, 14 rounds in total. The box does have some crinkling of the edge on that side. Looks like there was some rough handling, and the top tray of ammo is not protected.

I've shot worse, a lot worse.

Remember that because there is nothing holding the bullet in place except friction the bullet will start to slide forward as pressure first starts to build at ignition. This will keep the pressure from building up to any dangerous levels.

What's worse is to have the bullets seated too long, (into the rifling of the barrel), this causes the bullets to jam in the lands and the pressure as to hit much higher levels trying to start the bullet moving. A long jump to the lands of shorter rounds actually helps reduce peak pressure. That's how Weatherby uses more powder in their loads. The pressure curve is flatter and spread out over a longer period because their rifles have a long throat which lets the bullet have a nice long jump with no resistance which lowers the peak pressure right at the ignition point of the cartridge.

yep exactly the same. out of my two boxes of 250, the top trays had the damage. and yes, the outside low row of 10 and 4 on the short outside row. (see second picture, the entire left row is lower) they are mailing me a fedex label to get a replacement box, but what sucks is the back order which could be another 2 months. i'm just oging to throw all the junk rounds in one box and ship it off, while keeping the other box of all good stuff.

It sounds like the setback is happening due to rough handling of the packaged product, not by the manufacturing process of the ammo.

Aside from the additional wait which can't really be helped, its good to hear Basspro is doing right by taking care of you.

I have 3 of 500, and yes looks like a shipping and handling issue for mine as well.
