According to Midway you are not supposed to? Or anything besides CCI or Windchester for that matter. On Lee's website it does not mention anything about that. This is the hand held one. I figure though for what they want for it I should get on. I was told the RCBS was was good, I might shell out the money for that one.

Priming Wolf With A Lee Auto Prime?

i've used just about all the primers except magtec, they all work fine.Comment

I have run Federal, Remington, CCI, Wolf primers through my Lee hand primer.
I believe those admonitions about Lee are the result of lawyer intervention.
I always wear safety glasses while priming, just in case.
The only two cases of primer explosions that I have personally seen were in Dillons. I do not remember which brand of primers they were using.
Of course, YMMV.

The only thing I can think of that would warrant advising not to use the Lee auto prime is that Wolf primers are slightly larger (in my case, the large pistol primers) and require more force to seat, atleast when compared to CCI. They are probably worried about people putting too much force on the Auto Prime to seat the wider Wolf primers, possibly causing excessive wear and maybe even breaking the unit.Comment

it has to do with the chemicals used to make the primers. I believe CCI and some winchester are all type 1 primers which are safe for use in lee products. Less likely to blow your face off. There is a section on it in Lee's manual.
I dunno, I've never been much for guns. I mean, sure, we have the usual gun by the door, another near the TV, one in the kitchen, and another in the bedroom...and several others laying around. For the most part though, we keep our home free of guns. We are peace loving folks.Comment

I've been using a Lee hand priming tool since 1981 with just about every primer available in the US. I've never had one detonate or broke the tool yet.
I did get lazy about 5 years ago and bought a second one so that I wouldn't have to keep switching the plungers for small and large primers.Frank

From the Lee website (http://www.leeprecision.com/html/cat...rimtool.html):
WARNING!
Users have reported that the primers in the tray of an Auto Prime can explode for various reasons, some of which include: a cocked primer, or an attempt to prime a case which has a primer already in place, or more than one primer on the punch, or priming a military case with the crimp not completely removed. Should an explosion occur, our tests have demonstrated that safety glasses will normally prevent serious injury to the user if CCI or Winchester primers are used, because the explosion is minimal. Other primers, however, can explode with sufficient force to seriously injure the user, or persons nearby. We do not take any position with respect to the quality or performance of primers available on the market. However, only those primers manufactured by CCI or Winchester are recommended for use in the Lee Auto Prime, and when loading those primers, safety glasses should always be used. No other primers should be used with the Lee Auto Prime.
-----------------------------------------
One reason I still like to prime singly (with the Lee Ram Prime), even though it's slow: One squished primer will scare you and the dog. The chain reaction of a squished primer and a tray or tube full will scare you and the dog, and then you might need the dog to call the fire department or drive you to the emergency room...Comment

Interesting. What I take from this is that if I am doing them right it should be fine. From the Lee website (http://www.leeprecision.com/html/cat...rimtool.html):

I would say that's a completely accurate statement.

I just reloaded 250rds of .223 with Wolf primers and a Lee Auto Prime. No problems at all, and went very smooth.Last edited by tango5; 09-11-2009, 8:48 PM.US Army Veteran

I have loaded so many rounds with the lee hand held I have worn 2 of them out , I currently have 3 handy and one in the drawer. I have never had one primer go off, I have had everything you can think of go wrong in priming and I have used a variety of brands.
I used to hear not to use Federal (?) in the lee hand press , the actual word i got from a freind that is a gun writer is there was a rift between lee and federal and that was the reason , no actual mechanical problem.Comment

Did not know that (but it sounds about right).
The guy that 'supervised' my reloading education also told me to avoid Federal, without the other info. I took it on faith at the time, but have since tried a couple thousand (loaded 'em, squished 'em, bent 'em, never had one blow up anywhere but where they're supposed to, just like every other primer). I prefer other brands, though, just because of Federal's ludicrously oversized packaging.
