It would help reloaders if the industry adopted a single standard for primer size, but it wouldn’t help the new ammo manufacturers much to make things easier for reloaders.

I was surprised that a .454 uses SRP. As long as they don't make a special primer for those new polymer cases or needing to use all brass bullets for the .416...

Seperate, load and shoot. No biggie for me. It's still brass.

Is the trick to have a sample of one to compare because a few always makes it into the pile after I sort. They start to look the same. I also have never loaded a small primer and have a 2x fired bucket lot that I can guarantee no small primers.

Most of us who reload 45 ACP in bulk like I do (5000 rd lots) really hate the small primer. It really messes up your session on dillon 1050 with MKIII press and takes a lot of time to sort. I have one club member who used to shoot small primer 45. had to sort by headstamp and it takes a while.

I also thought that was strange until I looked at the amount of powder required and the pressures involved.

Now, as for why we even have this non-standard SPP variant of .45 ACP case:

From what I've read, it has to do with the brisance of the lead-free primer compound used in "non-toxic" primers. In smaller quantities, seems it's just fine, but apparently in the larger quantity of what you'd see in an LPP cup, it's a bit too hot to be safe. Therefore, they decided on an SPP version. Also remember that these cases are not really aimed (pardon the pun) at reloaders, but rather at people shooting at indoor ranges on a regular basis, e. g. military, police, and folks in the city and suburbs.

SPP 45 ACP is only worthy of being sorted into the trash. That is it. When I chase my brass at the range, I usually only pickup my own. Makes sorting a lot easier. I still double check as I?m depriming them (shuck I do by hand). I load on a Dillon 650 so I don?t want anything to break my rhythm.
