Shoot it or pull it down?

Today I was given a hundred rounds of mostly Denver ordanance and Lake city M2 ball 30-06 date mark is 42 or 1942 mfg.. Still in the original boxes. So pull it down or is it safe to run through a Garand? Are the primers corrosive?

What say you?

It is corrosive. Safe to run through garand. If it is in original boxes it is worth more as collectors item. I would either save or sell.

If it were mine I would hold on to it or sell it to a collector.
IF I were to want to shoot it I would pull it down and transfer the powder/bullet to a case with a non-corrosive primer then shoot it. Just nee one extra case and pull it down one at a trime and punch out the ols primer and replace it with new.

Corrosive primers.

Safe to use in the garand as pretty much all ammo is safe.

We did this all the time when making faux match rounds for service rifle competitions. Small variation though.... pull about 5 or 6 rounds, weigh each charge, than get the average. Pull all the rest, put the powder in your powder measure, and set the measure to the average. Either reuse the original brass after punching out the old primers and replacing them with new, or just use newer cases. reuse the bullet, or if you want to get really fancy replace with a new HPBT match bullet of the same weight.

Problem I can imagine is if ammo isn't all from the same lot. There could've been a propellant change?

Unless you want to save it as a collector's item, I would shoot it as-is out of your M1 and then clean your rifle afterwards. There's nothing like experiencing the real thing!

The Garand is designed to use a very narrow band of power from the 30-06 M2 cartridge.

The corrosive part is easily dealt with by cleaning thoroughly...

You are gonna clean it anyway, why not just blast away?

You are repeating the false claim that you can only use M2 ball...or some odd claim about similar power ammo. The garand was designed for M1 ball...174gr FMJ at 2700fps. M2 didn't come around until after the garand was in service.

Feel free to show us where an oprod bends and how that exactly happens...

Thanks for linking to an article that shows the CMP says commercial ammo is fine..but it's written by someone who doesn't know much about the rifle.

The reloading parameters for the M1 Garand are well known and have been for decades. The fact that you don't believe the facts does not make them untrue.
