I used 5744 powder for my reduced 223 loads. I don't have my loading notes right now. From what I remember, I used about 12-13 grs. or so for 1800 fps. or so with 45-55 gr. bullets.

Loads were accurate @ 100 yards for Squirrels. I used them in a 1-12" twist bolt gun.

5744 is nice because it is not position sensitive.

I was in your same boat. I just bought a 17 hmr for squirrels. It was the best option

I'm also looking for a reduced load .223 recipe so I can use a stash of lead-fee bullets until Hornady NTX in .17 HMR become available again. Trying to find some Blue Dot.

            Get a 22mag then.
            Lead free ammo is available.

Are you trying to keep the pelts? If not, just blast them at 3000fps. It's still basically zero recoil.

Lead free isn't an issue. I can use lead ammo. Trying to not blow up tree squirrels. I dont mind having to manual cycle an AR-15. I already have a dedicated 22lr upper that is good enough out to 70-75 yards. After that the groups aren't reliable enough for 100 yard work. Still ok for coconuts at that range.

It might be nice to have subsonic loads of maybe 75 gr or 80 gr. Not as much energy as a Blackout but more than .22 and a lot cleaner.

                    And then you mentioned Squirrels.
The LF would most likely mean Lead-Free since you need lead-free ammo to shoot squirrels in CA.

The 22magnum upper from Bear Creek might be your answer.

You can dump 4.0gr of trail boss under a normal 55gr for 1000 fps or so. There's no min load, it's just listed as 4.0 only.

Specifically assembling cartridges that knowingly induce a malfunction is not wise.

You mean like trying to use subsonic ammo in semi-auto guns that are not designed to function on subsonic ammo?

You should stick with manually operated actions to shoot subsonics if the subsonics won't cycle the action of an autoloader.

Thanks for the link. Cheaper alternative than Alexander Arms .17hmr. 17hmr and 22 mag are readily available and about the same price for me.

I never ever ever created my own ND while clearing a malfunction.

Maybe, just maybe someone else....Might have. But not me.
