It's fairly common even for modern munitions to not detonate as intended. See current conflict in Ukraine. Rockets, bombs and all manner of UXO is now covering that country, even though there is probably still WW2 UXO laying around in spots.

My guess is it was fired from an aircraft or ship off the coast, richocheted somewhere and landed there. Even if the munitions were WW2 Era, it could've been fired many years after. Remember, even 22lr can travel up to a mile. This could travel much much farther.

If it was a Japanese round that would be really interesting! I don't know when that track was laid. I wonder if a historian at Cabrillo would know more about how it got there.

There have been numerous repairs and refitting of our tracks in North County over the years. It most likely was brought in from another location with the projectile embedded. Over the years it was finally exposed.

It was likely fired towards the ocean. The US military has used the Pacific Ocean as a target for 100 +/- years.

I don't believe I've ever shared this info on calguns...

When I was in the 5th grade, the story goes that two elementary kids at another school not a mile away
brought some sort of ordinance to school for Show & Tell. Shortly thereafter it detonated and killed the
presenter and seriously wounded couple other kids.

I like to joke around with everyone around here, but this post is a bit serious.
