    Small pistol primers question.

Just how big a difference is there between standard and magnum primers? If, say, one could only find magnum, could they be used instead of standard? In the case of .40 S&W.

CCI small rifle and CCI small pistol magnum are actually the same primer. I have some SR primers that I got on a trade that I use in my .357.

In most cases you can downgrade, not upgrade.

I've not seen a difference in performance between the two. I will quantify this response by stating that I don't shoot maximum top loaded rounds often, I don't have testing equipment to confirm this practice, and I'm not a target or precision shooter. Just your average joe reloader shooting mid-range loads for practicing shooting and firearm management skills.

                    Never seen a difference.
I use smal rifle for 9mm also with no adverse effect and no difference in chrono readings.
I am wondering what small rifle magnum is like.

I've always used reg small primers for my 357 loads. Granted I'm not making fireball loads but I've never seen pressure issues on the primers.

I use the mag primers in all my loads and have never had a problem ---from mild to max

If you can find them, buy them. They’ll work just fine.

The biggest problem you might have with rifle primers in a pistol is the harder primer cup. Some guns might have trouble with ignition.
