Today nobody is weighing brass or measuring volume with water. You leave the primer in place and measure the volume of air inside the case without worrying about wet cases or water retention in the neck causing variables in your numbers. This also lets you know when your primers are leaking before it becomes an issue.
Good to know Lee is giving back to the sport as he always asked questions but never answered any for many years.

Today at 1000 yards you need to shoot extremely small groups in order to set a record.
Primers are all weighed and shot across a chrobograph looking for the smallest extreme spreads possible.
Bullets are all sorted and spin tested before being seated and yes you can see any errors even at 1000 yards.
The wind still kills you so that gets added as well.

A novice shooter/reloader will never notice the difference with target ammo.

Just load and shoot until you get good enough to know the difference. After some time you will realize the benefit of sorting, trimming, etc.

While I agree with almost everything you said, trimming or, at least, making sure all brass is within spec is a MUST DO for SAFETY. I'm lazy so, instead of measuring each piece, I just trim them all to the same length. For me, trimming is faster than measuring and I know I've taken one variable out of the equation.

Thanks! I learned something new today. I hadn't heard about measuring with air yet. I hope to go to Vegas next month and, now I have something interesting to research while I'm there.
