Actually, I think there was a store called Bazaar in between White Front and Gemco.

Back in the 1960's we shopped a lot at White Front and Zody's. Moved to AZ in 1971 where I saw my first Yellow Front. I have a couple old boxes floating around in my ammo cabinet too, Mohawk .22 and a few Yellowjackets I think.

My first job was at Zody's, while I waited to be drafted in 1972. I finally joined the Navy to avoid Viet Nam, where they promptly shipped me.

There was one in my small home town. I bought all my fishing, camping, and hunting stuff there.

A friend of mine did something similar. They used to show the draft lottery on tv every year. Everyone gathered around the tv, it was like watching the pro sports drafts now. Except they were choosing birthdates. His birthday came up like the 9th from the top, virtually guaranteed to be drafted. He figured that since Army was basically cannon fodder once over there, that he would join the Marines and at least have a fighting chance.

So he joined, went through basic and ait, and never left the country.

Are you referring to the Yellow Front on 7th Street and Dunlap? If so what years did you live in the neighborhood?

There was a place here in Scottsdale called Smitty's, it was just like today's Super Wal-Mart. Sometimes they had .22 ammo on sale for $0.49 a box of 50.

There was a Smitty's in my area of Phoenix, and I remember those prices in the early to mid 70's. I also got my 12 gauge dove and quail shells there for $3.99.

For the people that mentioned GEMCO, that brings back memories from my childhood in the 70's. There was one a few blocks from my parent's place in Fremont. I remember my Mom taking me grocery shopping there and I would always make her stop at the sporting goods section so I could look at guns. I loved that store, but sometime in the early 80's, it turned into a Target.

Every time we went to that GEMCO, I used to stare at the M1 carbine in the rack and tell my Mom that's what I wanted and I would one day own one. Thinking back, it had to be a Universal M1 Carbine, so to this day, I'm glad I never followed through to own one. Thankfully, I grew up, learned about carbines and ended up with a Rock Ola, Winchester, Quality Hardware and an IBM carbine.
