    Powder Availability

When I found myself short on primers I bought what I could and I'm ok for now. At first the spp were getting hard to get but lpp were still out there so I stocked up and since have traded some for spp. At the same time powder was still readily available so I bought more than enough for a few years supply thinking I could trade for whatever I was short on in the future. All through this I have ordered bullets and just waited a few weeks to have them delivered, short of the dirty looks from my mail lady all has gone ok.

So obviously the primers are the driving factor in short supply right now but how does this shake out when things start coming back in to supply. If primers start coming back on the shelves will there be powder to go along or because it faded in supply later will that be behind the primers in coming back in stock. And what about bullets, will there be a bigger demand once primers and powders are back?

Or, because of the unprecedented situation is this a unforeseeable, wait and see? I've only been reloading a few years so I've never navigated a shortage before, but to be sure I won't get caught with my pants down again, at least with regard to reloading

We can file it under we may not know what to expect. Primers are few and far between in the marketplace, and seems powder is more of a hot item. My suggestion is to check all the online suppliers to see if you get lucky. I have one time lol.

Some of the primer sales on marketplace are having price reductions which is good news, also I think people selling primers $200 per k were lying about being sold or sold for reduced prices to keep the market going. That happens sometime in the marketplace. Still doesnt help us out when we cant find any from the suppliers. You will be held by the balls from the resellers who will also be looking to buy bricks at regular market price and resell at inflated market price to keep it going.

CCI, Federal, etc. really are feeding it. Id rather purchase 5k each of primers straight from their website and wait 6 months then try to find that diamond in the rough stock somewhere.

I was asking myself what would be the magic number for someone who would otherwise not sell to get motivated. I guess $200 is that number for some but they are worth more to me than $$ right now.

      Is this an option??

My local Bass Pro always shows powder and primers out of stock online
You have to physically go to store to check stock
I’ve been able to buy 3000 primers in the last couple weeks, they do limit you to 500 per day, check your go to online stores daily, hourly
Just scored 8lbs of IMR4064 today at Mid South Shooters for $250 delivered

There doesn't seem to be a shortage of powder and primers, I see piles of both at all the gun shows I go to. It's just that the inventory has shifted from the primary to the secondary market. There's a bunch of it out there - it's just in "private" hands, not on the retail shelf. And for the time being, the resellers are controlling the market.

If the manufacturing pipeline is not putting primers on the shelf it's a shortage. People gouging has nothing to do with that.

I've noticed that, lol. I saw a lot of very dusty powder jugs on the table at last weekend's show. And some VERY old stock primers, too. Not discounted one penny.

Is there a legal limit on how much powder you can keep at your residence?

Per CA fire code in residential. Aside from black powder, sounds like limited to 20lbs and allowed up to 50lbs if held in a powder magazine box:
5606.4 Storage in Group R Occupancies

The storage of small arms ammunition components in Group R occupancies shall comply with Sections 5606.4.1 through 5606.4.3.

                          5606.4.1 Black Powder

Black powder for personal use in quantities not exceeding 20 pounds (9 kg) shall be stored in original containers in occupancies limited to Group R-3. Quantities exceeding 20 pounds (9 kg) shall not be stored in any Group R occupancy.

                          5606.4.2 Smokeless Propellants

Smokeless propellants for personal use in quantities not exceeding 20 pounds (9 kg) shall be stored in original containers in occupancies limited to Group R-3. Smokeless propellants in quantities exceeding 20 pounds (9 kg) but not exceeding 50 pounds (23 kg) and kept in a wooden box or cabinet having walls of not less than 1 inch (25 mm) nominal thickness shall be allowed to be stored in occupancies limited to Group R-3. Quantities exceeding these amounts shall not be stored in any Group R occupancy.

                          5606.4.3 Small Arms Primers

So unless you have a fire, who would know....the evidence "burned up", right?

The fire code addresses storage in Group R occupancy structures which means your house. Group S, storage structures, are not included in that fire code section. Additionally, Group S restrictions are for commercial storage.

In other words, unless the powder is stored inside your house exceeds 20 pounds, or you are running a commercial operation.....your detached man cave doesn't appear to have smokeless powder weight restrictions?
