The velocity listed in the book was probably from a longer barrel. It's not your chamber.

Max velocity is not always (or ever) best accuracy.

I’m looking for a node, or low Std Dev charge.
I’m going the test the whole spectrum of charges. I see 2500 for a 22.6 charge. I don’t know why I’m getting velocity so far off. Of what Hornady has posted. I think I have more room on the upper end of charges. I’m going up .3 gr. at a time. I’ll be extra checking for pressure signs.

I think most speeds are measured in longer barrels, 24".
Lyman 50th says they are using 2 barrels, Universal 24 and Colt AR 20".
                  Varget 23.5-26.5
                  2800 to 3100

Problem is it doesn't tell you which one they used...

As posted most standard rifle loads are assuming a 24" barrel. Using a shorter barrel you lose some velocity so dont go chasing published numbers.

Like it was noted above, never chase velocities from loading manuals as all of the variable of components and equipment affect it. Use loading manual velocities as a guideline for component selection and load development never as a goal.

The velocities that you see on internet forums are especially scary, don't ever use anyone else's postings about velocities as a goal for your reloading.

On the internet, the first liar never has a chance.

I don't see anything listed for a 62 grain FMJ in my Hornady manual. I see 60 grain bullets listed in .223, Service Rifle, and 5.56 data. The service rifle and 5.56 data is taking in 20 inch barrels, the .223 data is from a 24 inch barrel. You're using an 18 inch and will have commensurately decreased velocities.

In answer to your other question, in general yes, velocity is pressure.

Hornady.com has an updated page for 62 gr FMJ
I’ll be working my way up to Lymans 26.5 very carefully. Since it’s well about Hornady 24.9

The manufacturer of the powder lists 26.4gr max for 63gr bullets (close enough), which is a compressed load and still 5kpsi under max pressure.

I don't think it's possible to overcharge a 223 case with varget and 55-63gr pills. Your ideal charge weight is likely closer to 25gr, but if you're just chasing speed, varget is a safe way to do it.

                              Velocity does not equal pressure.
Identical barrels often show large velocity differences. There have always been fast and slow barrels for no apparent reason.
Different barrel lengths produce different muzzle velocity.
