Varget is pretty foolproof and is notoriously temperature insensitive but it’s impossible to find and meters like Schiff.

Varget and H4895 are short extruded powders and meter fairly well in my Hornady powder drop. Usually + or - .1gr when miss. Once in a while a .2gr miss occurs. If you're in a high power load that could push you a little hot, but usually fits in an accuracy node.
I use Varget in my .308 bolt and Mini 14.
H4895 is what I use exclusively in my M1A with 168gr projectiles.
IMR 4064, however, meters like crap.
I've had it completely fail to drop in .223 because it clogged in the neck of the drop adapter.Last edited by operavoice; 01-22-2021, 10:25 PM.sigpicComment

Varget meters great in a charge master.Comment

39 gr of h4895 and 39 gr of N135 easily shoot hornady 168gr Hpbt sub moa in my savage Ashbury. The best 5 shot group ( 1/2 moa consistently at 100 yrds) was 36 gr of N135 pushing the 168 gr hpbt but the bullet drop was pretty quick past 200 yards and recoil was very mild.CALGUNS DICTIONARY "FLIER": when a shooter wants to turn a 1 inch group to a half inch group because he flinched.Comment

I started out loading IMR 4064 prior to moving to Varget.
Varget is miles better in the metering dept.
Yes, there are powders that meter better, but in short range 6BR, I haven't found anything that groups better than Varget. Remains to be seen if the new barrel falls in line with the old one though (if I ever get it in to the smith for the barreling...)Comment

I find it very hard to believe that varget meters any differently than 4064.I started out loading IMR 4064 prior to moving to Varget.

Its great you found a load that works well for you, but its not the end all be all powder. If it were there wouldn't be other powders out there.Comment

CFE223 if gas gunLast edited by vaka; 01-25-2021, 4:12 PM.Old problems are like dry poop, if you let the dry poop sit it doesn't smell but the minute you decide to stir the poop with a stick, the smell comes back. Moral of the story, Don't bring up old problems!Comment

Varget is cut about half the length of the average 4064 granule. A third the length of the longer 4064 granules.
Umm, I don't think I said it was the end all-be all. I said it works in my (short range) 6BR. I'm running RL-15 for the long range barrel (though trying to find something that burns a bit cleaner.)Its great you found a load that works well for you, but its not the end all be all powder. If it were there wouldn't be other powders out there.
And to be honest, I only search for a workable powder until I get one that works acceptably for me. There's a lot I haven't tried, and likely never will.Comment
