This - Unique is a shotgun powder that works in pistols. Looks like they have a new formula

Principal Purpose: All-around shotshell powder, 12, 16, and 20 ga.
      Secondary Uses: Handgun loads

Now cleaner burning! Most versatile shotgun/handgun powder made. Great for 12, 16, 20 and 28 gauge loads. Use with most hulls, primers and wads

While one of my .45 Colt revolvers seem to like 7.2gr Universal, my other S/A likes 8.0-8.5gr Unique. Same with my Henry in .45 Colt. A liitle sooty? Ain't going to hurt a damn thing.

IIRC "Infallible" was the original 45 ACP powder. Became "Unique" after some buyouts, break ups and the like.

I don't know about "original" 45 acp powder. Hell that was a bit before even my time.

Yes, Unique is a dual purpose powder used in shotguns and pistols. As are many if not most shotgun type powders as well. Such as 700/800X, 2400, Red Dot, Green Dot, on, and on, and on.

Unique is rather sooty to begin with. sooty cases are just a typical symptom of low pressure cases. Harder brass cases more than softer. It's not an issue.

            CHOOT EM.

Haha. Before my time too and "everything" has been reformulated at some point(s).

Just saying the Alliant advertising Unique as "primarily shotgun" powder is just current marketing.

45 Colt and sooty cases seem to go hand in hand. Embrace it.
Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

Annealing reverses the hardening that occurs when brass is worked. Most of it is caused by the stretching and compressing that occurs when firing and resizing/flaring/crimping. If not annealed, the brass gets harder (more brittle, and harder to form), resulting in cracked cases (brittleness) and problems in getting your desired sizing (less malleability.)

That said, most people (that I know anyway) don't anneal pistol brass. It's considered, to at least some degree, a consumable item. Shoot it until it cracks or becomes too much of a problem to deal with, and replace it.

DO NOT anneal the case heads. They're supposed to be hard. The case mouth (and shoulder on a bottleneck case) is the target for annealing.

As to the red-hot comment, you should read the AMP article on Annealing Under the Microscope. Dispels (or at least refutes) a lot of myths about annealing.
My bad. Meant to say case mouth. Guess my head was in the wrong place.

Try sizing the case approx. half way down. Seat a bullet and check to see if the dummy round will chamber. Less expansion will be needed.

Marlin 45 Colt rifles have a reputation for chambers being a little on the large side. I only have them in 44 mag and 44-40.
