    all my loads - HP38, Titegroup, Trail Boss (very dirty), left smoke trails down the brass.

    As.I remember,.Herc 2400 was the cleanest. Unffortunately I couldnt find.it after my first bottle. lol

    I have been.out of.loading for 4 years , but thats.gonna.soon change .

      Very little soot, if any, accurate as the dickens and the gun just likes it. And guess what? With this Universal load, I don't seem to get any leading! Yea!!!

                I'm using 7.2gr/250gr lrnfp Missouri bullet in a Pietta "1873 Gun Fighter" with 4.75" barrel. A moderate crimp, not heavy. This is a much cleaner load than my 8.0-8.5gr Unique load. Both are accurate, the Universal load just works better/cleaner in said revolver. Hope that helps.

                      ^^^Question on these (quickload?) tables above. I thought SAAMI max pressure for .45 colt was 14ksi. But looking at the comments column, the notations there seem to indicate the max presssure is just a little north of 15ksi.

                      Am I misinterpreting the implication of those notations, or something else?

                        I used the CIP Quickload model which goes over 15.

                        14 vs 15 is is probably not going to matter in any guns made in the last 60 years.

                              Where did you read that? What was their reasoning?

                              Annealing reverses the hardening that occurs when brass is worked. Most of it is caused by the stretching and compressing that occurs when firing and resizing/flaring/crimping. If not annealed, the brass gets harder (more brittle, and harder to form), resulting in cracked cases (brittleness) and problems in getting your desired sizing (less malleability.)

                              That said, most people (that I know anyway) don't anneal pistol brass. It's considered, to at least some degree, a consumable item. Shoot it until it cracks or becomes too much of a problem to deal with, and replace it.

                              This. But you can look into annealing the case heads to make them softer and better seal the chamber. Do it the right way or you will destroy the brass. If heated to red hot for a millisecond and your brass is trashed.
                              DO NOT anneal the case heads. They're supposed to be hard. The case mouth (and shoulder on a bottleneck case) is the target for annealing.

                              As to the red-hot comment, you should read the AMP article on Annealing Under the Microscope. Dispels (or at least refutes) a lot of myths about annealing.

                                I use Titegroup in .45 Colt. Used properly, Titegroup is a very good powder for this cartridge. But yes, my cases are somewhat sooty after firing the rounds.

                                We've got to remember that the .45 Colt is a low-pressure round, and with lower pressures, you're going to have soot. But my load, while not a max load, is accurate and shoots well.

                                So my cases have some soot. So what? As pointed out above, that's what tumbler cleaners are for. Tell you this, it's a heckuva lot cleaner than the black powder .45 Colt rounds were!

                                Now, my ".45 Colt Magnum" loading, which uses a very healthy charge of 2400 under a 255-gr cast bullet, is very clean. But I estimate the pressure of that loading at somewhere between 30,000 and 35,000 PSI. I am shooting it in a Ruger Super Redhawk 454, so that load is perfectly safe in that revolver.

                                The point being, the more pressure, the more complete the burn. The less pressure, the less complete the burn.
