Is it worth doing a load development for a pc carbine

    Hello calguners
Freind of mine just got a ruger pc carbine
And asked if I would make i load development for him and transfer at local ffl but I wonder is it worth it being a 9mm and shooting at under 100yrds or even 50 yards in competition what are your guys thoughts
    Thank you in advance

Do you think you can get better accuracy at such a short distance. The only thing I thought was less recoil

I developed a great load for 9mm in the AR-15 platform. There is a lot of room for gains in a rifle platform. I am using HS-6 and 11 grain bullets.

Off the top of my head I think I'm using 6.7 grains with x-tream plated hollow-points and plated round nose seated at 1.12"

The slower powder increases velocity out of the 16" barrel.

The load works well in pistols also, it just seems a little smokey.

Trying to squeeze the best you can out of a weapon has its own rewards and sometimes they are practical.

sure if you want to people ransom rest pistols at 25 yards so yeah.

I have got 1 inch better in groups vs some that are lousy at 25 yards but most common loads will shoot fine more better is get trigger time.

What kind of competition? Since it's a carbine, I'm guessing some kind of 3 gun steel shoot style?

Id imagine any consistent charge weight load would work. I've found it crazy easy to make more accurate ammo than cheap fmj range stuff, so any carefully loaded handloads should be a significant upgrade.

                  sure...

Based upon the gas system, you might get a benefit from slower burning powders. I don't know if the action can handle +p+ loads...

For 357 and 44 there are contender loads- a lot hotter then revolver loads as the contender is a stronger platform.

It might be interesting to see what velocity one could get from different powders from a rifle length barrel....

Is it worth your time and liability should his gun KB?

Brad ... thanks for the tips! the neat thing about working up a load is that you can do some stuff not otherwise available. I hope that chrono like the one you have is soon available again 'cause I think it will fit my needs nicely. The ones I have generally carry the typical issues.

CFE Pistol, OAL 1.125, 147gn Hi-Tek coated RN very light crimp.

                      3.8gns 983 fps avg.
                      4.0gns 1038 fps avg.

Recoil is much more of a push. 124gr is good too.

Factory 115gn WWB is much faster out of this barrel and has snappy recoil, didn't care for it.

Isn't the PC Carbine a straight blowback design like the 10/22?

Blowback 9mm firearms can be very accurate or very inaccurate. I found that COAL is critical and very small length increments and amount of crimp can make or break the load. It is very easy to miss a sweet spot. The second thing affecting accuracy is technique. If you’re not on the rifle the exact same way every time it will throw fliers. I have shot one .5” group at 100 yards using sorted bullets and extremely fine tuning. I have shot many 1-2” groups. I feel I can shoot 1” most of the time with moderate tuning.
