    To avoid the problem of pushing the shoulder back so much I am using a feeler gauge when setting up the die. I don't know if the issue is with the die or the shell holder.
    I am honest, I can not move the shoulder back on a case when sizing, I can tell you why it is impossible; no reloader can tell me how they can move the shoulder back, that same goes for bumping the shoulder back, I understand it sounds cool but to me it sounds like you do not understand what you are doing to the case when sizing.

      But if they grind the die to be slightly short with a hard cam over. Then ammo loaded will fit and function in all rifles of that caliber. But be a bit of a sloppy fit. JUST LIKE FACTORY AMMO IS.
      Pacrat/potty mouth, again, what does a hard cam over accomplish?; I understand you are trying to sound cool while using reloading terms from memory. I have claimed my Rock Chucker presses do not cam over; the only answer I can get from reloaders is 'yes they do', where is your pride, self respect and dignity?

        I form 8x58RD cases from straight walled 45-90 brass. If it were not possible to create a shoulder and move it back, this process would be impossible. Same thing happens if I run new .303 Savage brass into my full length sizing die with the shell holder contacting the die at cam over. The shoulder is pushed back 0.030" as measured by the case head to 0.375" datum. That doesn't mean the brass is pushed back, of course. It squeezes forward to create a longer neck.

          Nonsense. I had to deal with this recently. For the first time, in over 45 years of reloading, I bought a 308 die that wouldn't resize back to SAAMI minimum @ the datum to head length 1.630". The culprit brass was L.C. 7.62 and some Federal GMM fired in gas guns. Thick brass. I even tried a .125" shell holder I sanded to .120".

          I contacted the die manufacturer and was advised to sent the die back to be skimmed. I measured the die length before shipping the die. After receiving the die back, the OAL of the die shortened by .008" from my earlier measurement.

          The die now works perfectly. For my thinner brass, I just use a Redding Competition shell holder set to adjust for more shoulder length with the die set to maximum bump. Works like a charm.

          My thanks to Wayne @ Mighty Armory for getting this corrected. His 223 die worked perfectly from the get go.

          These things do happen on occasion.

                Grinding on a die without a clue: The die returns the case to minimum length/full length sized. I have never ground the bottom of a die off, I have never found it necessary. Other reloaders do not have a clue as to the effect grinding on the bottom of the die has on sizing. Shortening the die by grinding on the bottom of the die shortens the die; I understand if I shortened a die by grinding the base I am making a custom die for sizing cases for short chambers.

                    Again: All of my tension gages measure in pounds, I am the only one that that understands from the beginning it is not possible to measure bullet hold in anything but pounds.

                    I have no ideal why you are so happy with dealing in tensions when you have no way to measure tensions. Tension is not interferents fit nor is it crush fit.

                      Flight762, please forgive:

                      I have a grinder that shortens the deck height of a shell holder and shortens the die by grinding the base; the tool can be used to make head space gages. When grinding the base of the die I have always wanted to know 'by how much'. If when sizing a case the press and die fail to return the case to minimum length the die will not make it to the shell holder; that leaves a gap.

                      When this happens and before I lower the ram I measure the thickness of the gap. The gap will tell me how much of the case is protruding from the die. I have found cases that had more resistance to sizing than the press could overcome. I have also cut short chambers; the short chamber requires a die that will size cases for short chambers; I do understand in the perfect world the die is shorter from the shoulder of the die to the bolt face, when determining if it is necessary to grind the base of the die I can use a head space gage between the die and shell holder. The gap should equal the clearance between the case head and bolt face.

                      Your die has been shortened by .008", I do not know if it was shortened to increase the ability of the press to overcome the cases ability to resist sizing or you have a short chamber.
