.32 S&W Long

OK, so I just picked up a S&W 30-1 that was made in '75-76 on the J-frame. I'm looking to do some reloading for this little gun. I read that the bullet diameter on the .32 S&W Long is .312. I did a quick search and was able to find several .312 and .313 diameter bullets. Most of the ones in .313 say they are for the .32H&R Mag. Would there be an issue loading these bullets for my new to me 30-1?

.312/.313" not an issue. It is common for bullets to be a few thou over.

For reference .001" is only 1/4 the thickness of a human hair.

Do you plan to shoot lead or jacketed? For a low velocity pistol round like 32SW i think hard cast lead would be good enough.
You could slug the barrel.
I have sizing dies to turn 315 lead down to 312, 310 and 308.

Missouri Bullet Co

The now discontinued Hornady swaged SWC was .314" and was a good choice for the .32 SWL.

IMHO the best bullet available now is the Missouri Bullet Co Cowboy #6 RNFP.

This is a 100 grain bullet, diameter is .313" Brinell is 12. Currently $34 per 500.

Your S&W, being a modern gun, can fire some decent higher level handloads.

Well good minds think alike. I've use MO bullets in the past and have always had good luck with them. So when I picked this up the other day I knew that I would be reloading for it and that's where I went first. I'll be getting some of these ordered up. Thanks for your input.

I've been using the same Missouri bullets in 32 h&r and .327 mag. They seem to perform well. Now to get that henry lever action in .327

Speer 98HBWCs seem to be becoming more available as well. My go-to for the past several years has been Magnus bullets (98gn button nose WC.)

Try a few different diameters if you can, as groove diameter can vary from .310 to .313.

I have one of these on the old S&W I-Frame (like the .38 S&W terrier).

They'll take pretty stout loadings if you handload- most .32 long and 38 S&W is loaded very weak to preserve those old top break revolvers.

These are quite fun to shoot with warm loads
