Blown 10mm Auto case forensics, what happened?

Found this at the range and just wondering what happened?

    Possibly fired out of battery?

Looks like a pretty healthy crimp on there. Looks like a cracked case

I think that's damage going into the wrong chamber or not in the chamber, I was thinking slam fire, but the firing pin def hit the primer.

        Maybe into a .45 ACP?

Out of battery detonation. Happened to me with a glock 20 gen 2. Lead handloads. Soft lead.
Burning powder in my eye. Mag blew out.
Not nearly as fun as it sounds either

              DUMB happened.

But he got a quick , but embarrassing lesson on what happens if he shoots 10.8 mm ammo in a 12.1 mm chamber.

Door ALMOST catches the end of his rifle. That would have been a VERY expensive experiment!

I was thinking shot out a 45 but if you have a 10mm you "should" be smart enough to load it in the proper gun...

I've seen things like this happen on occasion at the range I go to. 9mm in a .40, .40 in a .45, etc. Also seen rounds loaded backwards in the mag (which gets surprisingly well-stuck when the case head jams into the chamber.)

Usually happens with newish shooters, but on occasion it happens to experienced people who just aren't paying attention.

Ironically, I once saw an "instructor" chamber and fire a .223 round in a 7.62x39 AK while showing a customer how to use a newly purchased rifle. That instructor has since been banned from the range (for other safety violations.)

Happened to me once. I was at a local range for a little CalGuns shoot one evening and we were all trying out our pistols. One guy had just finished shooting another guy's 45 and then he reloaded it before handing it to me. My first shot went off but something wasn't right about it so I immediately stopped and we looked at the gun. Turns out the previous shooter had loaded up 10 mm in the 45. The owner had to disassemble the gun a little to get the blown apart case out but after that it was OK.
