Out of curiosity, if he was dead set that it couldn't be done, why did he try?

If he had 60% separation, why didn't he simply measure one of the other 40%?

Isn’t this just splitting hairs at this point? I mean the colloquialism “bump the shoulder back” means to reform the shoulder at the appropriate spot. We all know that the brass stretches (or flows, or exudes, or...) causing us to trim our brass after resizing. I mean, seems pretty obvious that you are pushing new brass up from the case body into the shoulder area such that some of the brass that was the shoulder is now in the neck, etc. Still, it’s not like the shoulder is specific to the quantity of brass that was originally in the shoulder of the case, the shoulder defines a location, not a quantity of brass.

I am the only reloader who understands tension and it's role in shoulder Bumping.
I would post how to do it but don't want to confuse FGuffey as it is very complex.
I make tensionometers I make tubing cutters and I understand brass.
Most would take a 30-06 case and using a Skip Otto die you would relocate the shoulder an inch or more. This of course is wrong as we don't want to relocate the shoulder we want to bump the shoulder.
I have contacted most of the engineers at most of the larger reloading die manufacturing sites and most offer shoulder bump dies.
None offer shoulder relocation dies because they understood what I told them.
I am letting them in on my tensionometer that measures tensions and hopefully they will be marketed soon.
I had the world's best gunsmith come to me after a customer made him some bad brass that I had to correct. It had lines on the outside that where fixed.
We are now working on world Peace but will put that on hold to answer shoulder bump questions.
To test ones reloading skills there is a simple test you can take.
If you can explain how a Larry Willis die works you are a reloader.
If you don't like the idea of the Larry Willis die studies have shown you won't understand shoulder bump either.

I formed 20 cases for his 20/6MM Remington Improved, the length of the case from the shoulder/datum to the case head from minimum length to .020" longer than minimum length in increments of .001". All he had to do was determine the longest case that would allow the bolt to close.

I made two sets, I kept one and sent him one set. He just could not understand how someone could size cases for a chamber he has never seen. I marked the length of the case from the datum to the case head.

Anyhow I formed cases for his rifle and sent instructions. He told me it could not be done.

This is why you should checkout your gunsmith before using him.
If he chambered the barrels and had the reamer all this information is at his fingertips.
Obviously he was a gunhack and not a gunsmith.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here, but guffey didn't fix anything. He used reloader knowledge/experience to adjust the die and "move the shoulder" to fit the non-standard headspace that the gunhack created.

He didn't fix anything but as you are not a good reloader you didn't read what he did.
He made 20 different lengths of brass because he isn't capable of properly measuring a chamber or the brass that came out if it.
If it takes you 20 different pieces of brass to get one that fits your not even a rookie your just a hack.
What's really sad is you thought he did something extraordinary when he didn't.
Is your tensionometer out of calibration?
