For most shooters, accuracy in reading doesn't matter all that much. Consistency in reading shot to shot is what matters.

Maybe if you're trying to make a power factor for pistol competition, OK, but you would likely add in a fudge factor for inconsistent loads anyway, wouldn't you?

Optical chronys are inconsistent. They read differently depending where the light source is.

I checked my chrono today against J-cat's. His is a magnetic one that attaches to the end of the barrel with a strap. With his .308 rifle he got a reading of 2545, and my chrono read 2505, so 40 fps slower.

His is the velocity at the muzzle, mine was 12-14 feet down range. We shot five times, and all five mine was 35-40fps slower.

I'm always interested in science experiments so I use a ballistic calculator to estimate the loss of velocity at 10 and 15 feet from the muzzle of a .308 using Remington factory 180 grain Core-Lokt PSP Express rounds, which has a muzzle velocity of 2620 FPS. At 10 feet the velocity loss is 26 FPS. At 15 feet it's 35 FPS.

After correcting for the different ways the two chronos measure MV, I'd say one is as "accurate" as the other.

MS sporter is $175? Not that expensive. But inconvenient with a revolver.

The biggest difference is, mine sits down range and you shoot over it. His mounts to the barrel of the gun.

Mine cost $125, his cost $175. I kinda like the ability to chrono a few different guns, just by picking them up, and shooting them.

To be fair, it only took J-cat two or three minutes to swap the attachment from one gun to the next.

Oh, and USPSA/ICORE matches typically use a stand alone chrono, because they're fast to use. Pickup a gun, shoot over it, pickup the next gun...
