I need to learn about Ammo

Having a good grasp of what goes on in the practice of machining metal doesn't mean that you need to become a Machinist. Likewise having a
good understanding of what practices makes assembling good and safe ammunition doesn't mean you have to make any ammunition.
Opening your attitude a bit wider would be a helpful practice to cultivate as well. Good luck.Comment

It is on the way, US public, and being currently used by the US Military.Comment

With your further qualifications as to what you seek. I will try to help. And hell, everybody needs hugs.
AMMO...........such a simple colloquial term. Yet a basis of plethoras of ballistics studies spanning centuries.Ah.. Someone who cares.
I have to say that some of you are Pretty F'n Funny.
Now where was I. Yes I have used my Guns.
What I would like to know are things like Parabolic, Full Metal Jacket, Grains-why.
Plus, 6.8 s coming back soon. I invested in that R&D@12 years ago. and it is looking good. The US Military has decided to change over to 6.8.
Anyway, what about the Ammo Info?
parabolic......denotes a "curve"..........often used to describe a bullets external path of flight. Bullet drop graphs etc.
fmj.....A lead core bullet with a fully enclosed "jacket" of guilding matl, usually a copper alloy.
grains....is a measure of weight......used to denote variances in both bullet weight and powder charge weight. There are 7,000 "grains" in a pound.
The 6.8 is IMO an awesome little cartridge. Mating the .277 dia. bullet made famous in the 270 Winchester. In a round suitable for the AR platform. In an effort to increase its lethality.
Any reloading manual will give fairly concise explanations for most AMMO questions. And the ABC's of Reloading would be a great starting point. Originally authored by Dean Grennell. Now long gone. And a great guy with a wealth of info. Who I consider to be a personal mentor of mine from back in the 1960's.Comment

The new 6.8 is nothing like the 6.8 spc or 6.8 spcII. Completely different beast.Comment

Yup, unfortunately for OP it's a different 6.8. The reason being, that old 6.8 wasn't so good.Comment

Grain=weight in an old school minute tiny measure (1/7000 of a pound), bullets(/projectiles, AKA: FMJ, JacketHollowPoint LeadRoundNose, SemiWadCutter, WadCutter, Etc and the capitalized letters are the typical abbreviations) and powder charges (smokeless, or black gun powder in loaded cartridges, under bullets.
Typically MFRs only list projectile weight on say "115gr FMJ 9mm Luger", not the powder, you have to find ammo you like, or roll your own by reloading, MFRs will not list grains of powder, or probably ever let them leak to the public.
In an example, 9mm is most typically 115gr FMJ, but comes in longer 124gr, and 147gr configs, and these are only typical. Hell one could actually use .380 projectiles in reloaded 9mm cases, but they are like 90-100gr (still 9mm diameter). The larger projectile weight usually means it is longer, with more rifling contact, so they can be more accurate, typically move slower, but hit harder.
Generally w/a lower weight projectile, the bullet is faster, but again this is only a generalization.
If you are not wanting to learn about ammo in depth then just buy a few different boxes, and see what will run well in your gun. If you want to learn, realoaders here know more than most life-long shooters, we just get a little pissy, with unspecific questions, like computer guys do...
For 9mm, it would be 115gr and 124gr, but 6.8 SPC looks like some typical weights are 86gr, 110gr, 115gr, and 120gr, per Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6.8mm_Remington_SPC
Rifle ammo is almost always jacketed (or this new PowderCoated) if it moves over 1000FPS-ish.
Most ammo doesn't typically need to be jacket or PC'd, if it doesn't move over 1000 Feet Per Second.
I'd say get a few different weights of ammo from a few different MFRs all on the same background check fee (so you don't have to pay more than $1 for the pinko's to legislate more).
(Just remember we have a background check fee now, and if you don't have registered guns at your address, you have a possible 10 day wait, and I think it is only 10 days to buy ammo with a possible ~$20 additional extended background check.)
If you are buying legally in Cali with a Cali ID, you can pickup ammo the same day you get your gun out of Jail (post-waiting period) for pickup, so I say do it then, but some places will let you order on their website, and just get the gun and the ammo when it arrives, providing it doesn't take more than 10 days for them to receive it.Comment

From what I have read, one of the reasons for the change of Standard Military Rifles is that the 6.8 will penetrate Body Armor.Comment

Same as me. Shooting for 40 years and learn about bullet and reload just couple months ago. Since you post on the Reload Forum I guess you want to learn to reload also, I start to learn about the reload on the first 150 pages or 13 chapter of the Lee's Reload Manual, if you buy a Lee reload press kit then the book came with the kit. You need this book or similar book to reload anyway, check out the local library or get it Amazon for 20 bucks.
Edit: Hint, if you put this book on your Xmas wish list, you may find it under the tree
