The biggest problem with the caliber is that the brass isn't reloadable, but I got tins, other people got tins..it'll be around for awhile- maybe not cheap anymore though.

7.62X54R surplus drying up?
Collapse

Gotta buy it online.. can get it for less than .20 cents a round. Big 5 sells it for like 20 a box, that's 1$ a round.. just a little more expensiveLucky you. I've found it in one place and that shop over charges for everything. They apparently know they are the only ones in the area that carry it. They guys at wally world stare at you like a moron when you ask if they can get it. Most of the time when I ask somewhere for it I get "uh, yeah we don't carry it."

There is reloadable brass around for both 54R and 53R not exactly cheap but its there
Also I do see more modern stuff from time to time (the yugo stuff that is in the market right now is 80s and people try to sell the dragonov ammo as sniper ammo from time to time)
but AR15barrels is right, 5.45 is back for now and 8mm shows up from time to time... but the surplus markets in both have dramatically less stock than 7.62x54R essentially its going to be like the 5.56x45 and 7.62x51 surplus markets in no time (ie factory over-runs and rejects)According to this CDC document the firearms related death rate has been surpassed by the poisoning death rate.

Russian 7.62x54R ran out a few years ago, and people were freaked out about the end of cheap, surplus, 7.62x54R ammo.
Then some romainian stuff hit the market, and czech, and bulgarian, and so on. There's ammo out there by the crate, but DON'T WAIT - One day it'll be gone. Buy a crate and sit on it.Originally posted by nickAre there any times when you don't have a loaded firearm within reach?Originally posted by M. SageI support violence against communists.Comment

Actually, there is still a pretty good selection of quality brass stuff for 7.64x54R. I just ordered a few boxes from Midway. I know its more expensive, but whatever...
I shoot my Nagants so infrequently that I really don't mind paying a little more for ammo. I'll feel steel to my BWK all day long but I can only shoot about 30-40 rounds out of my M44 before my shoulder threatens to mutiny...Comment

You're darned right I will keep thinking that...right up until the day that the 7.62x54R stops being used in modern day militaries (and third world countries do not count). Then I will change my opinion. When they stop using it, they'll stop making it. Then supplies will begin to dry up (think M2 Ball).

I've found the stuff online for $79+$13 for shipping for 440 rounds. I think that's good considering I only shoot maybe 10-20 rounds when I go to the range.sigpic
