    Ammo transfer

With the new laws here in CA, is it OK for me to give away ammo. I just came across 50 rounds of 22-250. Home grown loads not by me never had a 22-250. Got them when I bought some used gear.

Can I give it away for components only. If some one can thear them down for the brass and projectiles with out a gun shop trip. ?

Very grey area. Should be broken down. I would take them if close. Meet and lend you my dillon kinetic puller. You pull bullets and i take components. Buy you an inn-out double burger.

I've got a kinetic just not worth my time to pull them as giving them away. ^^^ We are about an hour and a half from each other. Cleaning the garage have more stuff to get rid of. Just don't know if some of it is worth the trouble to put in the market place. I am on the east edge of L.A. county near La Habra.

Perfectly legal to give ammo away if you have no reason to believe they are a prohibited person. Selling reloads is illegal, Giving them away is legal but not exactly advisable. 50 rounds not worth much.

Sounds like a gray area to me. Not sure you can give them away. I know you can give ammo to a friend while at the range together, but if you give him 100 rounds, he can't shoot 50 take 50 Home. He has to shoot them all, or return the unused to you before you both leave. I one is a pain to break down, but that would be the legal way to do it. I think some laws are stupid, but i tend to stay legal.

How about if you reload for a friend for slightly less than cost? I have been reloading for a very close friend that has done a lot for me. I generally absorb the cost of primers & powder & he supplies the cases & projectiles that I purchased for him with him paying for the cost of the projectiles?

The amount of money changing hands isn't the problem. It is illegal to manufacture ammunition and distribute it without being an 06 or 07 FFL.

Of course, CA laws also come into play and, it's illegal to transfer ammunition in CA without going through a LAV unless the parties are exempt.

Many thanks for the responses on my query. And my sincerest apologies for Bogarting this thread. No Sir, I do not have a license. On the lucks side, I have cleaned his cases & reloaded only 1 box so far. I guess we will shoot the 1 box of loaded ammo at the range next opportunity & return his cases to him. I knew, but unfortunately totally forgot about the PRK statute regarding transferring applies to private parties too.

What if the friend pulls the handle on your press to make his own ammunition out of the components that he owns. Even if you set up the press for him?

That's what I am going to offer him as an acceptable alternative. I showed him a few years back and he can reload much faster than I do. I will de-prime & clean his cases & he's going to have to do the rest. I am exceptionally anal when it comes to reloading and he may not be.

The ammunition vendor shall promptly and properly deliver the ammunition to the purchaser, if the sale is not prohibited, as if the ammunition were the vendor’s own merchandise. If the ammunition vendor cannot legally deliver the ammunition to the purchaser, the vendor shall forthwith return the ammunition to the seller. The ammunition vendor may charge the purchaser an administrative fee to process the transaction, in an amount to be set by the Department of Justice, in addition to any applicable fees that may be charged pursuant to the provisions of this title.
                          (b) Commencing January 1, 2018, the sale, delivery, or transfer of ownership of ammunition by any party may only occur in a face-to-face transaction

                          Federal law

Is a person who reloads ammunition required to be licensed as a manufacturer?

Yes, if the person engages in the business of selling or distributing reloads for the purpose of livelihood and profit.

                          Fixed that for you.

It is perfectly legal to give ammunition away in a face to face transaction.

A few years ago my nephews and nieces started shooting . Before that - I saved
any ammo given to me .
When they started , I ran out of room .
You give me ammo I don't shoot and it gets left on table at range - after all , I
                            pick up range brass .

Wait, what? I can sell an A2 stock for $250, and when the buyer comes to pick up his stock I can choose to gift him 500 rounds of factory 308 if I felt like being a nice guy?
