need help for second attemp in reloading
Tags: None -
I never used Bullseye or Unique powder. I used Winchester 231 powder. Used 4.8 grains with 200 grain lead semi wad cutter without a problem. I seated the bullet to the magazine length. Never measured the OAL.
IF you use under powered load, you will have to use lighter recoil spring. -
I use 200gr SWC and about 4.5gr of Bullseye, so 3.5gr and even 4.0gr seem a little light to me for a copper plated bullet. This is why I only do 10 each when I am working up loads, then I move to 25 or 50 and make sure I like them before I do 100 +
If you have a way to pull the lighter loads I would do that.
forgot to add this is with a US model 45 and a 16lb spring.Last edited by pdq_wizzard; 03-16-2009, 10:29 PM.Comment

what is your reloading method?
are you tapper crimping?Comment
-
yes i am tapper crimping the rounds. I am using the New Dimension Custom-Grade Dies from Hornady.Comment
-
as far as method goes,
tumble
size/deprime
bell and prime
charge the powder
seat and crimp the bullet with the Hornady dies.Comment

Are you seating and crimping in one step?
If so, you might want to try to separate that step. Seat first and then tapper crimp. I crimp my 45 load to .470 with a COL of 2.50Last edited by smokingloon; 03-17-2009, 12:08 AM.Comment

I use 5.7g Unique on my 200gr SWC. Dont forget to crimp! Unique is fairly dirty, but soft and easy to remove. Also, it is hard to double charge Unique with a 5.7ish load, as it will fill the casing pretty much to the top making it very noticeable. Which Reloading Manual are you getting your load data from? Be sure to follow the published data faithfully for OAL. Sounds to me like an ignition problem, I've never used CCI primers. When I started Reloading 20 years ago, I was told by several experienced Reloaders that CCI Primers had issues. Try Federal or Winchester. W231 is a good choice, burns clean as does AA#5, they are faster burning powders. Good Luck, Be Safe! "MAC"sigpic

I have never had any problems with any brand of primers as long as I don't handle them with my oily fingers. I used Unique once and the first lb was the last. It is dirty with powder all over the shooting bench. It didn't matter how much I crimped the bullets. Try Hodgdon Titegroup or Wincester WST, but don't rely on the starting loads to cycle your factory recoil spring. Starting with the light loads is always a good idea just in case the lot of powder you got burns faster than normal. The wise man said just find your place
