A pencil point propane torch's inner blue flame, just touching the rotating brass, will take about 4 to 6 seconds to heat the brass to that temp. Longer than that risks 2 potential problems: overheating the neck (brass gets too soft), and annealing further down the case than you want (softening the case body can cause case failures.) The water bath thing doesn't really do anything other than cool the brass off so you can handle it.
You can not make brass to soft. you are Annealing it, and annealed means "with as little hardness as possible" what you run into is over heating and degrading the brass from oxidation. heated for too long exposed to oxygen is bad.

There are a lot of people here posting that never used a heat treat furnace in their life, and are only repeating what the gun rags have printed.

        what do you think

I would polish them up and shoot them. If not save them for when the zombies come... 38 SPL and 45 ACP are low pressure rounds.

If you want to toss the 38 SPL and 45 ACP, I will pay for shipping it to me. I'll shoot it. How many rounds are you talking about?

This youtube gives a pretty good of what you're looking for re: temp signs.

The caveat is if doing this in a crude method you don't have the control.

Stopping just before the color change would be near impossible.

Nothing in that video shows "just starts to glow" except the over heated brass. Like I said use a temp indicating fluid and do it right but at 750˚F the brass is not starting to glow.

Agreed. It wont harden as it was not quenched. It wont anneal as you were no where near 450.

Two of her first 3 ex-husbands died of eating poisoned mushrooms.

What happened to the 3rd one?

He fell out of a 10th story window

                        How did that happen?

Pushed out the window, he wouldn't eat her mushrooms.

Maybe "glow" is being misinterpreted. The "critical point" is just before the color change, but that point is impossible to recognize and stay just below without an automated method or paste. No one wants to paste 1000's of pieces of brass, but instead use the paste to "calibrate" their method.

No harm is done going to that color change, so it becomes the default when using more crude methods.

The video does a good job of depicting the "critical point" while also showing graduated extremes.

This started in referencing a post where it was said to get them cherry red. I think we agree that is wayyyy too hot. I think we also agree that an oven at 350* will do no harm. I suppose if you had the brass very close to the element while it cycled on/off the brass may see above that 350*.

                            FWIW, quenching doesn't harden brass.
