How long did your Electronic Scale last?

Okay, I'm not sure if I'm looking for advice or just want to tell my sob story, but...

Long story short I have a Cabela's brand electronic scale for powder. Recently, when I put some powder on it to measure it, the wait would continue to fluctuate and would never settle down, moving 2 to 3 grains either direction. It has lived a good life, I always put it back in the case when I was done and it's never been dropped smashed or bashed. And it lives in a relatively constant temperature room.

I emailed Cabela's because of their Forever Warranty on their Cabela's branded products. They said no because it was almost 10 years years old and digital scales should not last that long.

Anybody out there have any electronic digital scales?

    How long has yours lasted?

do you let it fully warm up and keep it running warm while using it?..are you using it near neon or flourescent lights?..batteries getting weak?...I usually use a 5-0-5 beam scale but do have an electronic digital that I've been known to use (take it to the range, etc) and if everything is perfect the digital electronic is pretty much ok...but let one thing get a bit out of whack and it's all over the place...I find that when weather keeps me from loading in the garage I can bring my stuff inside where the climate is well controlled...I have checked my 5-0-5 against the digital on several occasions...found that if I leave my digital on and "idling" all the time and if I don;t use my flourescent desk lamp (use a regular bulb lamp)that the digital get's pretty reliable and seems to hold well...but as soon as I shut it off and let it sit for a few minutes and turn it back on...it has to go through a whole new "warm up" period to be worth a damn.
God and the Constitution give me my rights and actions...any other input is just blabbering.

I have been using it for almost 10 years and it's been rock solid and very accurate. Just started acting up a couple of weeks ago.

      -plenty of warm up time
-in a room that is 70F +/- 5 degrees all year
      -power source is AC

I understand it 10 years old, just seems like it should last longer than that

Fluorescent lights, cell phone, Bluetooth speakers, electric heaters; basically anything that an generate magnetic/electrical noise can cause a scale to bounce around. If you're on an AC source, the noise generation can be quite a ways away and still affect the scale (like the other end of the house far away), as it can put noise on the AC line throughout the house.

That said, it is an electronic device, and electronics can and do go bad.

Mine might fluctuate +/- 0.2grains at the most, but never more than that. In your case, a 2-3 grain fluctuation is a huge problem. That doesn't seem to be related to warm-up times. Throw it away and get a new one, they aren't that expensive.

Electronic scales do not have an expiration date, but parts break. Try changing the battery. Take the thing apart and look for loose wires/connections

I love these lifetime warranties from places like Cabela's and Hornady. 10 years is considered a lifetime. I guess they mean a dog's lifetime.

I've been running it on the AC adapter for 10 years. But maybe something has changed in my house. Maybe all the Christmas lights?

I'll try throwing a 9-volt battery in it.

All I use is electronic scales. I have a cheap Lee, but the dampening makes it almost worthless.

I check it from time to time with the calibration weight, and bought 3 more cheap China scales for comparison, and they are all pretty accurate. One is my lady's, and goes to .01...

I don't know what you originally paid for it, but what has been your per month/year cost?

                      I figure that anytime I pay more than $20-$40 and I get 3+ years out of it...about $1 a month...I'm ahead

My Ballistic Products Ballistiscale is spot on and has never missed a beat. I have balances too, but this thing sees the lion's share of work.

Well, I tried several things and yep, its done I ended up grabbing a scale off amazon for $20 with 4.5 stars over 2,000+ reviews!

I guess back to the original question...

How long has your scale lasted?

Well, I bought an Ainsworth electronic scale back around the mid-70s and it still works great. Big and bulky compared to today's models, but it does its job.
I bought a Lyman 1500 about 12 years ago and it works perfect.
My ChargeMaster was one of the first produced (smaller output tube than current models) and it still works perfect. I forgot about it once when I was weighing 4.8gn of 231/HP38 for my .45. Something called me away and I didn't get back for about 3 days. My pan had 4.8gn of powder in it and the display showed 4.8gn. No drift. I calibrated and checked, and it was 4.8gn.

My 1st one lasted about 1 year. They replaced/repaired it and it lasted about 3 years. No repair/replacement this time so bought another brand and it is about a year old and still working.
I do a lot of loading
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.
