True. But if I'm going to bother prepping 5.56 primer crimps and chamfer the mouth, I'll wait till after the 4th or 5th firing to toss.

Ok but if you only knew how long your chamber is you wouldn't trim after the first firing. My chamber is 1.795" long. Most factory chambers are that long. Having owned a lot of different factory rifles from .221 Fireball to .45-70 I can say with certainty that .050" over trim length is the typical factory chamber length.

Before reloading for anything one should figure out his own chamber dimensions.

That is interesting. I don't have a way to adequately measure the neck depth in my chambers. However, I can believe what you say, that there is more space than the max trim length.

Your numbers don't match some of the more common reamer specs. The longest spec I found was Clymer 5.56 NATO @ 1.775 which only gives .015" from the "max trim" length. Not a whole lot of leeway.

Of course what is spec'd may not always match what is out there-which may explain your long neck.

Randall has a matrix of specs here too:

Measure your chamber, don't go off reamer prints.

For the AR: Disassemble the bolt and do like you would to check headspace.

Size the case for .001" shoulder bump and push it in with your finger until the shoulder bottoms out.
