Just dealt with this exact issue a couple weekends ago. Yes it's a chemical reaction and not a heat reaction.
I was pretty mad when I discovered the issue and kind of resigned myself to the fact that it's toast. So, I figured that I would get aggressive with cleaning it and if it worked, great, if not, I already figured it was done.
I first started with one of those scotch brite discs on my Dremel. It cleaned all the embedded powder out of the plastic, but left it all scratched up. I then went and sanded the inside with 2000 grit sandpaper. Whole process took about 20 minutes. After I was done, it looked as if it was new...
Lesson learned... I will say this, I do like the finish on the plastic now, better than it's original finish.
