Friend came to shoot yesterday, has a S&W 1911 .45. Last round in mag made a quiet pop and fizzle, slide locked up pretty tight. Managed to get it open and found this round, no primer and brass bent and wrinkled. Burnt powder at barrel end and chamber. Slide still barley cycles. http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/a...494203455kiesh

I dont see how any powder could have gotten out of that case .........is it possible the cartridge was already in that condition as he loaded it into magazine?? People dont pay a whole lot of attention to ammo while loading usually. Is there a flash hole in the case?Comment

I am not an expert but it looks to me like the round slammed into a round already in the chamber and then blew out the primer hole.
Was this new factory ammo? Home reload? Range Reload? Something he found lying on the ground/ range table?Only slaves don't need guns

It looks to be that a primer was installed backwards. The primer fired and drove the case further into the chamber.
The firing pin is also possibly damaged.
Look at the smoke on the lower case and head. The case mouth is bent as well as the case. The powder was never ignited by the reversed primer.
Appears to be the remains of an anvil in the primer cup.

I can see flash holes, round was fully in chamber, bottom of round was totally black (i wiped off to see better) i also think residue is binding slide. Dont know if primer fell out? I also think it may have been a reload friend wasnt sure. Contaminated powder? Thank you all for your responses.bumpComment

It was black because there was a discharge of primer compound to the rear.I can see flash holes, round was fully in chamber, bottom of round was totally black (i wiped off to see better) i also think residue is binding slide. Just like rocket fuel the primer charge drove the case forward. you may want to scrape out the pocket as it looks as if the primer is still there. I see no flash hole in the picture but possibly the rim of the primer.
The powder is still in the case, unburned. Even just a primer charge will push a bullet out of the case.
The firing pin channel needs to be checked for debris. The extractor needs to be checked as well. This all happened back*****wards with the results we see in the pictures.
Do not underestimate the power of a primer.

^^^This makes total sense and is consistent with the damage to the shell. Look at where the lip of the shell started to curl up against the end of the chamber. It was black because there was a discharge of primer compound to the rear.

I think you're right ironhorse,I cleaned shell and what looked like flash holes was just a pattern in the residue. Will tell friend to check things you mentioned. Thank you for sharing14942135342911238859718.jpg your knowlege.bumpComment

Looks like the flash hole was never punched through. I'd guess the primer was in correctly and had no where to go but back. Lucky fellow!
In fact a Google search finds missing a flash hole is not unheard of. This is also RP ammo.

Looks like someone made some bad ammo maybe crimped too hard and collapsed the case, then thought they would shoot it anyways.Friend came to shoot yesterday, has a S&W 1911 .45. I mean, it somehow managed to get past all of the proper inspections.
I seriously DOUBT a 1911 could wrinkle the brass like that. If it can- then DAMN that is one tight lockup. But I am pretty certain that it takes a lot more force than the 21lbs of recoil spring to do that. I think it was loaded that way and maybe there was barely any powder in there anyways, Use a kinetic puller and see what the powder comes out looking like.
On the other hand, perhaps the bullet was so jacked and pressure ended up shooting out the primer instead of the bullet... Take it apart first and have a look at everything. This was most likely a reloaded round, I am guessing from the spots.Last edited by stilly; 05-08-2017, 1:20 AM.7 Billion people on the planet. They aint ALL gonna astronauts. Need GOOD SS pins to clean your brass? Try the new and improved model...
