The SAAMI length spec is a max length. Actual cartridge length will depend on the bullet being loaded, and how deep you choose to seat them.

I'm of the opinion that case gauges are nearly useless. It needs to plunk in your personal barrel. The barrel plunk test is more valid than a case gauge.
Valid assuming you have the gun, and can/are willing to break it down to a point where you can conduct a plunk test.

Case gauges require no disassembly, and [should] present the SAAMI minimum case specs. Meaning that if the cartridge drops into the gauge it will drop into any SAAMI compliant chamber.

Invest in one of these every time you load a new caliber: (9mm case gauge)

Always set up your dies with a dummy cartridge, and use a case gauge or barrel to make sure they'll chamber. Then run a second dummy round all the way through the press and confirm that it case gauges. Then run 5-10 complete rounds and verify that those case gauge. Then you're set up to run a long production run.

I've reloaded tons of ammo on 650s and I wouldn't dream of not testing a few before cranking out a thousand.
        What he said.

I've reloaded for a distressingly long time (I must be old) and when those steps are followed, things have always worked. I often insert a "test fire the first 20" step but when I reload I'm out in the sticks so it's just a matter of stepping out my back door.

Check COAL and seat it deeper if the round is not fully going into batter. Try seating a few out of the 800 a bit deeper or do a plunk test. If you're getting squibs, you'll need to check the powder you have in there or the powder throw. Invest in a bullet puller.

Yes saami spec is a max length. For 9mm I can never come even sort of close. It's always shorter, by a lot. Sometimes I can't load to book spec length for the powder I'm using either. That's what I mean about 9mm being picky. I could load .40 crazy long, waaay over spec, and it still was completely reliable.

Most of us can strip the barrel out in about 5-10 seconds from most 9mm pistols. I want to know my ammo fits in my personal gun. Some guns won't reliably feed even factory ammo!

              Its all bullet profile dependent....

Read the manual. I was nervous about reloading. I went to a gun show and walked up to a genius. Told him I never reloaded and thinking of giving it a try but nervous. He gave me his card, and sold me a reloading manual. He said read it all the way through then read it again. Then note the steps you want you read again. After you do this, you'll know more than 80% of experienced reloaders out their.

Me, I load 20 rounds light. Chamber check. Then I increase the powder charge a little on 20 more. Repeat this step a couple of times.
Then off to the range, or desert with chrono and target. I want acceptable velocities, and accuracy and function. If the lighter round feel good, and are accurate, I note it and save that into for new shooters. (start with less recoil, less bad habits).

Reloading is 10 art, 90% common sense. The common sense comes with knowing each small step along the way. Thus single stage loaders have to load in steps, and it teaches you the steps. You can do this on a progressive add long as you do it by the steps. As the great advice above stated, deprime resize, pull the casting check that step out. Start primer drop powder, pull the case out dump powder check weight. Inspect primer depth. Don't Make 800 rounds of faulty ammo. Your super recipe for 9mm may work great in your Beretta, but not so great in my Hk. YouTube is your friend and enemy. Great advice, and bad advice. Watch, take notes, check your manual for the safety of the advice. Reloading, check 10 times, load once. Be smart, be safe. Learn to inspect primers for over pressures.

It's been a year, he probably figured it out now, but aside from the case gauge above, try this Shockbottle "hundo" case gauge. It is pricey at $100+, but after I used it and culled a few rounds, I think it's worth it.

BSPS offers Hundo 100 Round Case Gauge Chamber Checker by Shockbottle / Shock Bottle, and others by Dillon Precision, DAA, EGW, and Lyman at the Pro Shop
