    Feeling Blue

i've been considering reloading for awhile. with no ammo online without extra fees for background checks next year i bit the bullet and went blue. ended up ordering a Dillon 650. i opted for the case feeder, strong mount, powder fail safe check, aluminum handle and starting out with 9mm. i ordered an electronic scale that goes out to the thousandths on amazon. i also picked up the 60" work bench from harbor freight and plan on picking up the tumbler there as well. i plan on picking up the quick change head tool from dillon for 40 and 223 down the road. have been doing a lot of reading and picking the brains of the few i know who already reload. i also ordered a hard copy of the 50th edition Lyman to have on hand. i also have an electronic caliper and ordered a Lee case gauge. hopefully i'll be able to free up time to clear out a space in the garage next week to set everything up and start reloading in a few weeks. any and all help and tips before setting everything up is appreciated.

Which scale did you order? Are you sure it goes to the thousandth of a GRAIN? Or does it say thousandth of a GRAM? Because .1 grain is .006 grams. So a thousandth of a grain is .000065 grams. Unless you spent thousands and thousands on a calibrated laboratory scale, I doubt it does that.

The more important point is that many gram scales don't measure in grains. Make sure the one you got can do both. If it's battery powered, it will drift with battery voltage and temperature, maybe even because of fluorescent lights. If it plugs in it will fluctuate with grid power and florescent lights.

In the end I would trust a beam scale over a digital. Most people go digital when they first start, imo a digital is just not accurate enough to not have a beam to check it against. Digital is more convenient though.

Decent digital scales will start around $100. The $20-$40 ones are best left to the guys selling weed to their buddies by the gram

          This^^^^^

I bought a digital and my dad gave me his beam scale. I was very conservative when I started and used both to head check myself. Now that I have a few years under the belt I don't even bother with the digital anymore.

Yeah, you can play with your stuff all you want, but read the book and buy a single stage press like this: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw...s+jr2&_sacat=0 FIRST.

Load a few rounds on it, make a ladder load or two or twenty and THEN start using that progressive if you feel the need to do so.
