Advice Please! Dillon Caliber Conversion or buy a Lee Pro 1000

    Hi All,

I just started reloading and I bought myself a xl650 for 9mm as that is what I'm primarily shooting in USPSA. However; I'd like to start shooting major in 40/45. The caliber conversions are pretty expensive for Dillon. It's almost cheaper to just buy a completely new rig like a Lee.

What are your thoughts/recommendations?? I really don't want a new set up but is the Dillon it worth it?

    Thanks in advance.

Depends on you . If you can afford it - stay with dillon .
    Me - I have a lee load master . I do at least 1000 reloads a month , but generally about 4 calibers . 6 nephews and 2 nieces = about 15 calibers .
That is about 17 tool heads [ I keep spares ] and 9 shell plates .
Dillon does not sell dies for all calibers and if they make them , they are out of stock .
You can go to ebay right now and find a plate for the Lee for 50 AE [ same as 44 mag ] Even some plates for the Lee are hard to find I E - the 25 and 32 ACP .

That will depend mostly on your setup. Do you have bench space for so many presses? I would buy the conversion if it were me. Dillons conversions are expensive but if you watch what parts you are using they often crossover. For example if you have a .45 conversion and decide you want to run .308 or .30-06 through the press, all you need is the black casefeed adapter. Have 9mm and want to run .38 super...same conversion. Have .40 and want to run 10mm...same conversion. For me, o bought the 650 because I wanted to save time. I like being able to change the conversion in 10 minutes, slide in the different toolhead and be cranking out rounds. You paid for a Dillon, out that sucker to work.

Pretty quick to change over on the 650 so I would get the conversions myself. I have a 1050 and even though its a pain to change over, I still do for 3 calibers so far, with an extra toolhead now ready to setup for another.

caliber conversion on the 650 is pretty simple, some are really simple - like 9mm and .38/.357 is little more than swapping toolhead.

MrElectric-03 - Do you happen to know where I can find all crossover options?

Thanks all for your input. After having spent the extra money on a Dillon I'm going to plan on getting the caliber conversion and put that press to work!

As a matter of fact I do. This is an awesome page to bookmark for a Dillon guy.

This is the exact reason I bought the hornady lnl ap. But to each their own.

                      Buy once, cry once.

I too started with 9mm last year. Since then I added .38spl/.357mag, .45acp, .44spl/mag and .45colt/454casull on the way. Think of it as you bought the dies/conv kits instead of ammo. It's about $250 for each carbide pistol caliber with toolhead and stand from Dillon.

Nuuze - I have my press on the same bench, mounted in the same location.

I purchased both of my Dillon 650's for less than that. $350 years ago and one $275 for the other last year. Both with case feeder and multiple conversion kits. If you look hard enough people do get rid of great equipment for great deals.
