I know what you mean. Some of that Hornady brass for .44 or .357 is shorter than regular loads. Especially if I purchased the FTX I think.

But yeah. Too short does NOT reach the flare = shaved or bullets that will tip over once placed on top.

So it was a flaring issue? Glad to see OP got it corrected...

Need GOOD SS pins to clean your brass? Try the new and improved model...

There are 2 sizes of the reamer
I hand deprime and prime , clean the primer pocket , flash hole
        And into tumbler .
The reamer is used more to find a bent case but also flares and
removes little nicks . [ you can get very small nicks / bends
That you don't see just from the casing hitting ground .
BTW - if you flare / ream to much - you will end up with a few
Split cases but that could be from to many reloads . Same with
reaming primer pockets - loose primers .
        I don't use plated or coated bullets - I tried free-bee in the 357 ,
44 and 50 AE - Besides leaving stuff on end of barrel , the gas
Ports / piston had stuff build up . They may be all right for revolvers
        , But not for my semi's .
        I only reload jacketed
