I've gone from a kinetic type puller, like yours, to a hornady lock and load collet type. If you have a single stage press handy, it makes pulling bullets quick and easy. whole setup cost me about $30 not including the press.
Bass pro has a couple of the pullers in stock but you have to get the collets from midway.

Duh. Bang it againt wood, not concrete, vato.

      Edit:

Oh, you were trying to pull 223 bullets? No wonder, those light bullets don't come out too easily with the kinetic puller. But the 45s come out with one or two wacks since they're so massive.

          +1

I sent back my RCBS kinetic puller and got the Hornady collet-based puller instead. Much easier - there is no way I would ever go back to a kinetic puller

Chief, stop playing with kinetic pullers. Get a Forster or Hornady or whatever brand collet puller. Life will be so much easier with that.

There is a place for both of the types of pullers. Lead bullets don't work with the collet type pullers due to the softness and lack of area to grip depending on the bullet style.

You guys breaking the caps, are the caps getting contact with the surface you're hammering against or are they blowing apart from the shock transfer alone??

Blew the whole head of an aluminum-shafted RCBS hammer long ago. No problems with the full plastic version of it since. And it is in the wrist. That first one got a lot of use before it gave up the ghost.

First off, if you guys are using those hammer kinetic bullet pullers then toss those universal things, I just use the shell holder and tighten down the screw cap on top of it, fits snug. I've pulled about 25 rounds of 30-06/308.

I average about 2 hits to get the .308 projectiles out on a 5" piece of 2x4

One other thing to watch out for is to make sure the 'head' of the puller is vertical when it makes impact. If it's at an angle, the force will torque the head where the threads are.

Not saying that happened, but it's one more thing to look out for.

I smack mine on a doormat I keep in the garage. Over concrete. I keep that in the garage too.

Well, once again, thank you all for the responses and the tips. I just got off the phone with Dillon and I told "Lee" that I broke the cap and the chuck on my bullet puller because I wacked it too hard on the concrete trying to get a bullet out of a .223 shell and he laughed and asked me for my Customer # and said that he was going to mail one off today I even offered to pay since it was more than likely my wrongdoings that broke it and he said that it is all part of the Dillon warranty..... Man, this guys have earned my business for life.

I got the same answer when I emailed RCBS when my puller did the same thing. They send me 2 new caps for nothing.

I figured DIllon would hook you up. You may(will) pay more for that blue color, but the back-end support is top notch.

I've heard horror stories about customer inflicted reloading press damage that Dillon has fixed free of charge. One story, it may be an urban legend, was of a guy who was moving and had his press in the back of his truck. The press fell out of the truck and went bouncing down the road and totally wrecked the press. The guy sent it back to Dillon to get an estimate of the repairs to fix it, and Dillon either replaced it or completely rebuilt it free of charge.

I do know that guys will go press shopping at garage sales and find completely rusted out presses and get those rebuilt by Dillon for free.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

I use an RCBS that I've had for years and I only smack it on concrete, never had any problems. (I'm not a little guy either, my feelings are the hard I smak it, the less times I'll have to swing it, the quicker I can move on to something more entertaining.

Are you sure that the cap was tightened down on the collet? It works lose after a couple of hits. I've broken a couple not paying attention.
