    185gr FP (45 acp) with HP-38

I cannot for the life of me find any load info for this bullet with this powder. I have loaded some to 1.135", 5.2gr of powder. Has anyone loaded this before with HP-38?

Basing the data off of 185gr SWC, been googling to no avail... any help would he appreciated!

Assuming your FPs are also cast, any 185gr SWC data should be fine. You could also try data for Win 231, which is more common but the same powder as HP38.

5.2grs seems like a reasonable starting load here. For years I shot 200gr SWCs over 5.1grs of 231 with good results.

In my experience, light bullets in .45acp have to be pushed fast to get any accuracy. If that bullet isn't shooting well for you, try moving to 5.6-5.7 grs to see if it improves.

Most of the guides will have data for W231, which is the same thing as HP-38. 5.2 would seem to be very low for a 185 if using a factory spring; a guy I shoot with uses a similar load to that for 2600 competition, but his guns are set up for very light loads.

I load Zero 185gr JHP with 5.4gr of HP38. Accuracy is about 1.5" at 25 yards. Velocity is about 880fps out of my HK USP Expert if I remember correctly.

I tried from 4.8 up to 5.6 but 5.4 shot best and functioned flawlessly in my Colt GC (16lb spring), HK USP and Sig P220 (20lb spring). Cast bullets of the same weight recoils less but 5.2 should work. I load Missouri bullets 200gr SWC with 4.7gr of HP38 and it functions in all my guns.

Loaded some 185 fp (xtreme bullet) with 5.2-6.0 of hp38.I was getting 925fps with the 6.0 out of my commander with no overpressure signs.I just replaced the recoil spring with a 20 pound as well.

Aint like 5.0gr of HP-38 and MANY powders good for 180-230gr in .45 acp?

Please step away from your equipment until you figure out where to get a decent book...

Yep, New BoLee starting on page 248 pretty much gives hp-38 safe for 5.0gr in most/all loads from 180-230 and I stopped reading...

            Now GO GET A BOOK!

I have a book. And Reloading app. None of them have flat point load data, as I stated.

Thanks for the help everyone else.

Not a very good book. Sierra or Hornady I could picture doing that.

BoLee or BoLy hell, even BoLyC would prolly have that data.

You are welcome. Now go get the latest Book of Lee- No wait, get the last one, it is cheaper now that the newer ones are out.

I guess it is at least a good thing you knew to come here to ask, but seriously, it is like asking where in california can you buy a honda because you can not find them anywhere...

And I can take a plethora of powders, power pistol, 700-x, 800-x, HP-38, wst, wsf, w231 and others and typically have a decent shooting load by simply putting 5.00gr of it into a .45 and putting on my choice of 185-230gr pill. Of course I will double check, but that number aint far off if it is incorrect...

                  Yeah it is that easy.

Now go buy the Book of Lee... You will never ask that question again.

                    My 45ACP 185gr load data

                    To answer your question directly.
                    Yes.
                    What works for me is:
                    45ACP Berry's FP bullet, 185gr
                    COAL=1.155"
                    Winchester large pistol primers
Federal cases(if that matters to you)
                    HP-38 4.8gr @ 663fps or
                    HP-38 5.0gr @ 717fps
                    Shot out of Sig P227.
At 4.6gr and lower powder charge, I was having issues such
as failure to feed, stove pipes, and slide not cycling.
I tested up to 5.6 grains of powder(793fps ave) with no issues.
                    USE @ YOUR OWN RISK.

Hodgdon has reloading data on their website for180gr LFP.
Also, COAL of 1.135" was the shortness OAL in my load manuals.
Unique powder did better for me over a wide charge load for same 185gr FP.

I did try an OAL of 1.200" with the Berry's Bullets FP 185gr, but the wide profile of the bullet did not allow the round to pass "the plunk test" in both of my Sigs. A different bullet manufacturer's bullet might be good to go with a OAL of 1.200". Load charge of HP-38 started at 5.0gr and went up to 6.8grs. 5.4-5.8grs produced most accurate shots.
