different primer sizes on 45?

Hey guys,

Just got started sorting through some brass and i've noticed the primer sizes are completely different...50/50 on my batch of brass. I always thought 45's were large pistol primer only?

This brass is once fired (my own) from different bulk size stuff. What gives?

And is this a potential hazard in terms of loading a large primer into a small hole?

Some .45 ACP casings do require a small pistol primer. Do not attempt to use the LPP in the SPP casings.

Yes, you must sort once fired brass for LPP and SPP. LPP was the standard until manufacturers started using so called lead safe or green SPP.

You will learn to be able to sort them pretty quickly both from bottom and top. The SPP ones usually are extremely clean inside the case. Not fool proof but just another filter when sorting.

I load my SPP with the same exact load spec as the LPP, just the small primer. It generally is within in 25fps.

It's a pita.
Trying to force a lpp into spp brass is dangerous!
More "filters" to be aware of---
Newer Federal and their filial brands(Estate, Blazer Brass, American Eagle, etc...)---most often spp.
European made ACP---most often spp
All brands of "green" ammo---spp
WWB, UMC, Magtech Sport---most often lpp

Pick the size primer you want to roll with and keep those cases separated from the noncomplying brass.

I try to sort them when I collect them at the range, then go through them again after I tumble them.

But it never fails that 1 or 2 get past the inspection and hang up the reloading process.

I use LPP for 45, but my collection of SPP is growing. When I save up enough I'll reload them.

I save the ones I find with SPP in a Baggie and give them away when I get a decent amount.

Yes, it's a pain to sort, but once you know what to look for it's a minor inconvenience.

When I have a decent collection of SPP .45's I load them up and use them in situations where I expect to lose a good chunk of my brass.

I too use the exact same load specs in my SPP loads. No issues as of yet.

.45 ACP is LP and SP now thanks to the asshats that tried to reinvent the wheel. SO just get a primer pocket cleaner if you are not good at eyeballing two-three together and sort them yet again. Sorting LP from SP is rather fast.

^^^^ Or use a cheap "go gage"- get a 3/16" drill bit. If the butt end fits into the primer pocket it's large, if no go, it's small.
