The taper crimp is pretty forgiving of case length variation........a roll crimp is not. If you run your fingers over the edge of the case and dont feel an obvious bump, your crimp is good. It should just remove any belling done and thats all.

You don't crimp pistol ammo that headspaces at the case mouth. You simply straighten out the bell on the case that was made when dropping powder. Adjust your seating/crimping die until your rounds will freely chamber check then stop tightening it. Too much crimp will actually bulge the case walls beneath the mouth and have two effects: 1. The bullet will be loose 2. The ammo will not freely drop into your chamber.
